V7 ii crankcase thrust washer seizures
« on: December 27, 2017, 03:56:02 AM »
Hi, I had a v7 ii which seized due to the known problem with an engine thrust washer. Apparently a symptom is changing clutch adjustment, which mine didn’t have.  Does anyone know if there is a range of affected engine numbers? thanks

Hopefully a dealer will chime in but the first place to look is in the NHTSA recall database.  Just search for vehicle recall NHTSA and it should come up.  Punch in your VIN and you should get both recalls and TSBs (technical service bulletins).  It may be in there.

My 1984 V65SP had the same problem.  Fixed at about 1500 miles, ran at least 40k after that before I sold it.

Hmm... the bike I’m looking at is engine number 292 which is right in the middle of that range so I assume vulnerable. I’ll get in touch with piaggio in the new year and see if they can be more specific about the affected numbers as I really don’t want to go down an engine swap route again as my dealer, and unfortunately most of the ones in London seem to be crap, now that Corsa have gone. That may not be fair but I haven’t found any decent ones yet...

I really want a v7 iii but now that they’ve lowered the pegs I’m concerned that putting a 17’ wheel on will make it a real peg dragger, something I’ve done on a v7 classic and Vii special. Actually what I really want is a v85, but not an enduro style version but doubt that will appear in 2018...

Thanks for the info all.

Don't know of a V7ii Special or Racer that are affected...So that may be a safer bet.

I can't imagine that the Special or Racer is any safer, the engines certainly all come off the same line.

If you really want a V7III, then buy one, and if peg dragging become a problem, you can address that with adjustable rear sets, and/or maybe longer shocks.

Why do you want to switch to a 17" wheel (I'm assuming front, since the rear already is)?   Quicker turn in?    Raising the rear a little (longer shocks) will also accomplish that, as well dropping the front (raising the fork tubes in the triples), though, see back to peg dragging comment.

If you remember when the V7 I was released it was all Stones at first, then the Racers and Specials came later at intervals.

There is a belief that the factory tends to run models in batches - all Stones for a run, all Specials for a run, all Racers for a run etc.

If true, then the botched assembly motors might be limited to one or two models (if the split ran across two model batches).

I would not put longer shocks on the 3. when I put the HB center stand on my 17-3 and have it upit clears the ground a lot. when you turn the rear wheel over something in there hits a bit. Bothe Guzzi Steve and I think it is the U joint touching a bit. longer shocks could let that be an issue.

Todd at Guzzitech was trying to put together a range, though I don't think he ever got something definitive.

Here's what he has so far:

If that’s the case then it seems to have been kept quite quiet. I’m surprised as in my case the engine seized solid but I was only going slowly and was able to pull in, Coukd have been nasty. I would have thought it would be a recall, the reason not is probably due to the fact thst they don’t know how many it affects or which ones, as they couldn’t recall all vii’s. Tricky position to be in I guess.
