Back in my youth(20s) when before first getting into riding MCs I was heavily into sports cars and their racing while going to school in Costa Mesa (Orange Coast Jr. College) in soCal for 3 years.  I drove a `59 PV544 Volvo and went to car races @ Riverside Raceway.   I found out that Dan Gurney lived in Costa Mesa and even found his address and drove by his house!  In front of it was parked a Mini-Cooper woody.  I so much wanted to stop and knock on the door but didn't feel worthy enough to actually talk to the man.  I was nothing but a punk kid sports car race fan.    I idolized the man then.  His feats are a legend to me.    I saw him race repeatedly on a Ford stock car, Indy type car,, CanAm sports car @ Riverside Raceway. I even raced my 350 Honda twin @ Riverside Raceway later.    I see now he was 12 years older than me.  He rode a Bultaco dirt bike.

My Uncle Kenny who passed away about 7 years ago was Dan's 2nd employee at AAR starting in about '63.  My Aunt gave me the news this morning.  She still has the "Trophy Room" intact and it is full of great treasures.  End of a very cool era for sure!

One of the fondest memories of Dan Gurney for me was the write up in Car and Driver by Brock Yates after the Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash. Can't remember if it was the first or second race. Yates described what it was like to ride with Gurney in a Ferrari Daytona. Most memorable was telling us how Gurney had one hand on the steering wheel while traversing Pennsylvania in the early AM doing over 120. All the time talking to Brock and acting like it was just a walk in the park. I'll never forget that. Dan Gurney was one of the best US race car drivers ever.
I feel really old now.

Sweet guy, indeed. I knew we were close in age. Makes me hate this aging thing even more. That era was, to me, the best of racing. The engineering was understandable and referable. The drivers did their best with poor safety systems in the cars and on the tracks. Cars were indentifiable most anywhere on the track. You could see and feel what made them fast. Walter Hansgen was a friend and neighbor. Gurney was but 3 years older than I. Dammit  Sad. Very sad.  R3~

And he lived a life most of us can only dream about. He has been a Motorsport Legend for over 50 years. Amazing really.
