New Muffler?
« on: February 14, 2018, 08:31:53 AM »
I needed to move my son's bike to his new house about 5 miles away. He has a Suzuki SV650 with a really nice after market muffler that puts out a nice exhaust sound.
I know on the Moto Guzzi Norge, people have talked about replacing the stock muffler for an after market one. It made me consider dropping about $600.00 for one. The sound is intoxicating. I am aware of dealing with the Fuel Injection also.
My Friend's Harley has aftermarket pipes and I have ridden it a couple of times. When I am on that bike I feel like the Terminator in Terminator 2.
Could be just what my bike needs.
Or not

Pete would probably recommend a Mistral with the DB killer installed .

The pair of Mistral Classics/H-pipe that I put on my Vintage put out a wonderful sound.  The bike gets better fuel mileage, runs cooler, and has more linear throttle response. If you get a freer flowing pipe, I would highly recommend an FI ECU re-flash and a TPS check at the same time. It may cost a bit more, but your bike will be transformed...

I fitted a Staintune to a Breva 1100, it sounded nice and mellow and I never noticed any popping or any other problems associated with the mod.

I have a 2008 Norge. Would the GPR muffler work with the stock fueling on my bike? I'd like a deeper sound and cooler running please. Thanks for any insight to this.

The earlier 2V Norges have the cat in the 'Collostomy bag' pre muffler don't they? In which case you can run pretty much any pipe although it'll be better with the dB killer in.

With the 8V's they will always run better with a dB killer in and will run significantly worse with the killer out, especially if you stick with the original CL map.

I have a Staintune on my Breva 1100 also. Without the db killer it is a little louder than I like but it isn't bad. It does have a nice tone.

I have had two Norges (both 8V 2014 models). On each of them, the stock muffler opened up noticeably with enough time and miles and eventually sounded much better than when new. However, the sound is not what I would describe as "glorious."

On my first Norge (the one a speeding school teacher rear-ended), I eventually put on an Agostini (before she rear-ended me). On my current Norge, I have recently installed a Mistral. Both cans look nice and weigh significantly less than stock. Both sound better than stock, with or without DB killers.

Currently, I am running the Mistral with the DB killer installed. It sounds really good and is probably a little (a very little) louder than stock. Both the Agostini and the Mistral sound glorious with the DB killer removed, but as Pete has said, your performance may suffer a bit. (I have not noticed a difference in performance, with or without the DB killer in either the Agostini or the Mistral, but I am not allowed to ride "freely" in America like our friends down under; idling in bumper-to-bumper traffic, I have not noticed any difference in performance.)

I am somewhat confused. Would I need a Fuel Injection update on my '08 Norge if I installed an aftermarket Muffler???

No, many run fine, but you can get them to run better yet. Yours should have the latest factory in it.

JeffOlsen,

I'm thinking about changing the muffler on my 2013 Griso 8v 1200 & have narrowed it down to an Agostini or a Mistral. While there is a price difference between them what's your opinion about how they compare as you've had both of them ?

A friend of mine has some Agostini pipes on a V7 racer & loves the sound, consequently he is dismissive of the Mistral. What's your 2 cents ?

^ I think they both sound great, especially with the DB killer removed. Perhaps the Agostini has a slightly better sound to my tin ear, but tone is very subjective. Some people like creamy, smooth overdrive; others prefer Velcro-like fuzz.

One thing I did not like about the Agostini: for the Norge, it is suspended by a thin metal strap with a large rubber band between the strap and the body of the muffler acting, apparently, like a shock absorber. The Mistral, on the other hand, has a solid metal arm riveted to the muffler, which seems like a much more secure way to mount the muffler. (For the Griso, I do not know how each one is suspended.)

My Norge has a Staintune.
400 mm versus standard 500 mm offering.
No dB killer, but I'm reliably informed it'd go better with it in.
Don't give a rat's though, it goes like the clappers as it is !

Mine (as you know) Pete, is an '07 2 VPC.
I think it's in the original muffler, 'cos when I ditched it for the Staintune, there was/is no cat evident on the remaining system and the original muffler weighs a metric tonne !

Spoke wheels on a Norge - NICE

Staintune shows up the rear wheel nicely. However Do you run standard panniers with that muffler?

Cheers

Yes, but I took a scoop out of the pannier to clear the muffler.

I really want to be one of the Mistral ones. I like those because I don't want to pay $600 and have to stare at a strap holding it on. like the Agostini's I've seen.
