Getting tyred of this ?
« on: March 11, 2018, 11:32:30 PM »
Well, I don't know..
I put the Pilot 4's on @ 112,500 (112 in the book), and now they're at 133,300 and not completely gone.
(but very close, coming off now)
That's 21,000 !
One mitigating factor is that the first 4,000 k of their life was in non stop rain and cool weather with gentle riding.
(European wet weather), but was heavily loaded.
Dunno ?

Is that good for a Norge? Well at least you don't have canvass showing. And it looks like lots of slab kms. Perhaps next time try a few extra psi, see if it still handles OK, and lasts longer. (Another thread mentioned the disagreement between tyre manufacturers & bike manufactururers re recommended tyre pressures).. You do the distances - should get an answer back pretty quickly.

I'm more than happy with 22,000.
A bit surprised, usually around 16 or 17, but as suggested, the first 3 or 4 thousand were pretty gentle.
Also I'm a 40/40 or 40/42 guy. Any less and I reckon they steer like the Exxon Valdez and any more in the rear and the middle will disappear quicker.
Also yes, 20,000 of those were in Europe on autostrada/autobahn etc..
Once on the Stelvio and once on Transfagarasan but I ride pretty conservatively when "alone" in Europe.

I find these mileages astonishing! If I can get 10,000km out of any rear tyre on the Griso I go into a rapture! I currently have PR4-GT's on the green horror and at 8,000km they are both completely trashed.

I'm no hero, really, I ride like the grandfather of the oldest man in the world! Honestly. I have no idea how people get these mileages out of modern tyre's!

A couple of things there Pete.
You are a little more forceful than I routinely am.
When we pulled onto the Federal Hwy yesterday and scarpered up to speed to match the traffic flow, I rarely accelerate much more than that but I suspect you exert your "authority" a little more often in that regard.
I think you covered the second one when you commented on how I could apparently hold my own (almost), against the "Green Horror" up to 160 odd, when you Beetled my Norge.
You mentioned something about ballast...??

I'm always amazed at the mileage other people seem to get out of a set of tires,  (even after converting Km to Miles!)  On sport-touring rubber, my back tire is usually down to the wear bars by 7 to 8000 miles.  I almost always replace the front just due to cupping before the rubber is gone.

My goal is to get 6000 miles out of a rear. I once got 6500 with my Norge. I just replaced a rear on the MZ at 3500, but it was a cheap Shinko, and that MZ single is a tire shredder..

Mine too.   I consider 7K miles out of a rear tire on the Stelvio or the Triumph Trophy SE (and 13K out of the front) to be acceptable tire wear for a heavy, two-up bike on hot pavement.

I'd think something was wrong if I got 15K out of a rear tire with these huge modern tires.

Now an ME880 or Dunlop 404 on my SP (rear) would go 15K regularly ....

Oil change at 110k , oil change and tires at 112k , next entry 6 months and 15k later ? Skipped a few entries ?
Nup, and I knew someone would check..
Only ran the  oil 2,000 ish k and dumped it 'cos I wanted brand new oil in for Europe.
Left London on 112,000 and Agostini's changed it @ 122,000 then finished trip around 128,000 give or take..
I just try to make sure that the 10,000 intervals are adhered to as close as possible.
6 months disappeared 'cos of the time between leaving the bike in London and collecting in Melbourne.
If the numbers look dodgy under the glare of forensic examination, I'd be happy to repeat the trip with an "observer" to verify the stats.

Would also love to get that kind of miles off the rears. Both the Norge and the T-3 eat up the rear tire in
3,000 -3,500 miles. About double that on the front.

The PR4 GTs (heavy-duty version) on my Norge consistently get 13,000 miles (20,000 km) or more, though the grip in the last 1,000 miles goes away enough to tell me that it's time to get new ones. The standard PR4 I would not expect to get the same distance.

With the GTs, the rear and front wear at about the same rate for me.

I've an idea that the cupping may be excaserbated by low pressures. What psi do you run? It occurred to me on Sport Demons & BT45s on the V7, but doesn't seem to happen on the Avons at 36 psi. But different bikes, different tyres, different pressure.
