A great light - extinguished RIP Stephen Hawking
« on: March 14, 2018, 01:49:47 AM »
But we will benefit from the warmth of his insight for centuries to come....

Stephen Hawking died today.

From CNN... https://www.cnn.com/2018/03/14/health/stephen-hawking-dead/index.html

From the BBC... http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-43396008

From CBC... http://www.cbc.ca/news/world/stephen-hawking-dead-obituary-1.4575341

He admitted that he was not always correct, he shared his accomplishments by honoring others, and he made the most of a life that was faced with the most extreme of challenges. Would that we all could do so...

Undeniably a brilliant and incandescent mind but as a person? Like all of us he had faults.

My family, coming from Cambridge, were people I visited a lot and more than once I ended up in restaurants where Hawking was eating with his retinue. His behaviour wasn't always exemplary.

Just sayin'.

The fact you are brilliant doesn't give you the right to treat other people, (Like young wait staff.) like shit. Like reduce them to tears type shit.

I suppose that 50 years of ALS could affect a guy's sense of humor.  Did you know him before he was stricken?  Personally, I was appalled by his denial of God.  But if we measured everyone by their failures rather than their contributions, we'd have a hard time moving forward.

Having a terrible affliction doesn't excuse shitty behaviour. Anyway, speaking ill of the dead and all that David. All I was trying to say was that he was human and shouldn't be overawed by his indisputable scientific brilliance. Nobody's perfect. Most of us are a dumpster fire of woeful inadequacies. I'll lead the charge on that!

I got to attend one of his lectures when George Mitchell was able to bring him to Texas A&M some years back.  One of my sons actually got to meet him when he made a visit to Caltech.

Nobel Prize?  Pfffft!  You know you've made it when you become a guest character on The Simpsons.  Who needs a stinkin' Nobel Prize?

He proved time travel didn't exist by throwing a party for time travelers, but not sending out invitations until the party was over. No one came.

I prefer to believe that someone took him up on his Time Travel offer.

Seriously though, sad day. The world needs men and women like Hawking now, more than ever.

I heard on the radio this morning that he acknowledged his book, a brief history of time, was the most bought & least read book of all time = )

Consequently he latter published ‘a briefer history of time’

I'm wondering how he would've known, after the fact, if anyone did go back in time to that party.

Some mind boggling shite to contemplate, right there.

Because the people from today's future, would know that the invitations had been sent post party, and ducked back for a squiz.
Btw
Loved the movie.

Yeah, it's the TT conundrum.
If you go back in time 100 years, and shoot your great grandfather, you never would have been conceived and therefore could not gave gone back in time to shoot your own grandfather...

That would have been a good trick indeed...which reminds me of a bumper sticker I saw once...not that it applies to me as I"m not in this category...:

You would still be you, even after you killed your great grandfather.....you could still come back to the present time.....your timeline would change, but you would still be you. Its the timeline that would change from your prespective....and your prespective only.  You would be aware of the two timelines but no one else on earth would be.

R.I.P. Mr Hawking  all your questions are now answered.

Didn't know til today during a discussion of his work that it didn't qualify for a Nobel because his theoretical work had not been proven by himself or others through experiment. Still that Simpson episode............
