Hello all.  I am new to this forum, having recently purchased a 2002 California Stone, my first Guzzi.  It has suffered some neglect, but I am confident I can get it back on the road.  Once I have done this, I would like to make it more my style of machine.  I've tried to PM one member about some pictures that were posted from a thread that is about 9 years old.  I could not view the pictures from the thread, and my PM did not go through.  Could it be possible that my registration is somehow incomplete?  Sorry if this is a dumb question.  Nice day today shaping up in Central Indiana... gotta get ready to ride!  Thank you in advance for any help.

Welcome to the madhouse Brother Jim
The Stone is a nice machine, not too many things to worry about, ride it for a while before making any mods.
The tank moat drain will plug with rust if its been left outside but its not something you need to fix straight away

Ha, Chuck.  I'm in Anderson.

Thank you for the greetings, folks.  I've been interested in Guzzis for quite some time, and recently considered purchasing a new Griso 1200SE, but decided against spending the money.  I'm borderline too many bikes at this point!  Guzzis, IMHO, are gorgeous machines with gobs of character, and I love the prominence of the engine.  It's different!  Picked up this Stone locally off of Craigslist for $1,200, which I thought was a great deal.  Needs everything, but otherwise seems in good shape.  Engine-wise, all it seems to need are the valves adjusted, and I want to re-torque the heads.  After that I will change all fluids, brake pads, fork seals and tires, and then we will hit the road!

Noticed the tank drain plug after removing the fuel tank, Roy.  I've not yet removed that, but the tank is in great shape, minus the faded Flint Orange paint and sticky gas cap, so that should be good.  I made a proper mess pulling the tank, as I was committed at that point and there was more fuel in there than I had handy capacity for!

Not a priest, LowRyter, just a nickname handed to me by some of my riding buddies.

Will try that PM again.  Thanks again, everyone, and I will try to post my progress and pics as I go!

Welcome Brother Jim! I went to high school
In your town and maybe Chuck can get you hooked up with the Guzzi family in Indiana. Go to a rally - it will seep in after you meet fellow Guzzisti. We’re a varied group and share a passion for these machines that bonds us. Hope to meet you soon.

Chuck, I have your #.  Thank you.

Tried the PM again.  Same thing.  I select the intended recipient, and for a split second, username appears in the recipient box, only to reappear just below the recipient box with a red "X" next to it.  Hmmm.

Jim, the sticky gas cap can be fixed easily with a few minutes of time and a little work. If you disassemble the cap, you'll discover a plastic piece in the assembly. Its vertical surface is what is sticking. If you have a dremel, put a small milling attachment on it and run it around the perimeter that is sticking. Just a little, don't get ramy with it. Once it is not sticking, reassemble. Viola.

Thanks, Zoom Zoom.  At point of sale, I was hoping that there was not a lost key or something, but the owner assured me this was a one-key machine.  It ran, so I figured the fuel wasn't ancient and the single key worked the helmet lock, so I forgave the issue.  I dripped a bit of Kano Kroil (good stuff!) into the cap and let it sit, but still no good.  I then shot some carb cleaner into the keyhole (towel, eye protection) a few times until it came out clear.  Voila!  It wasn't perfect, but I got it off of there, intact.  I was a bit surprised (and relieved) that the cap and the inside of the tank looked brand new, but I noticed that the cast locking tabs on the cap were a little rough, so I gently filed the burrs off and tried again.  Better, but still not perfect.  Did a little research (what brought me to the Wild Goose Chase)and did just what you mentioned, and put a little powdered graphite in the keyhole upon completion.  Works just fine!

I needed to do the procedure I described a couple of times before the plastic piece stopped swelling. Then I didn't need to mess with it again. I have also just sat at a rally and worked on someones cap with a pocket knife for a bit to get it working again. Moral to the story: it may happen again once or twice before the plastic decides to stop swelling.

Somewhere along the line, there was a replacement part made of metal. If that can still be had, you could also change that out if you want.

As long as the cap can be gotten off, the fix is pretty easy, so I was never compelled to replace it on my bike. When it starts getting hard again, deal with it sooner than later.

On mine same fix, then I went to work on the metal part in the center and polished it. Not once in 10yrs has it stuck again and never will.
There is a metal cap out, Guzzi fixed the issue, it's $80.
