I remember reading about Formula 1 racer Michael Schumacher setting some very respectable times on a World Superbike test a few years back (before his skiing accident obviously)
He ruffled quite a few feathers, when he turned in lap times that were better than many of the established racers.

The license plate on my Griso reads "ASCARI" - most people don't know who he was, and even those who recognize Italy's only Formula 1 champion don't know he raced motorcycles before he raced cars.

I always remember these guys and gals jumped in or on these machines with minimal safety equipment and variable mechanical support long before fat factory contracts or contingency largess to grab the brass ring of speed...not to take anything away from today's hotshoes but c'mon...mechanical or drum brakes, narrow tires, sketchy or non-existent crash  barriers or racing on public roads... certainly MY definition of cojones...YMMV

Many say that Nuvolari was the greatest racer of all time.

His performance at the Nurburgring in 1935, with a come from behind win in a dated Alfa vs the German Auto Unions and Mercedes, was considered by many as the greatest of all time.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1935_German_Grand_Prix

It was a damned impressive drive.  It's difficult to compare among eras.  But many consider him the best of the best.

I've never read anything that Alberto Ascari raced motorcycles.  He was a GP champion.  The haunting thing is that he was a 2nd generation driver that was killed in unexplained accident:

"There were several similarities between the deaths of Alberto and his father. Alberto Ascari died on 26 May 1955, at the age of 36. Antonio Ascari was also 36 when he died, on 26 July 1925 (Alberto was only four days older). Both were killed four days after surviving serious accidents and on the 26th day of the month. Both had crashed fatally at the exit of fast left-hand corners and both left behind a wife and two children. Also, both had won 13 championship Grands Prix."
