How to take fuel pump out of 1200 Sport gas tank?
« on: March 30, 2018, 03:48:00 PM »
I  am replacing the fuel filter on my 1200 Sport. I have the tank off and upside down. Took out the 6 bolts that hold it in. I can grab it and wiggle it around. How do I remove the whole thing?

If it's anything like the Norge, you have to turn and manipulate it out...just take your time and don't force it but there is a magic combo of twist and turn that brings it right out...

Make the hole about 20% larger.  Putting it back in may be a problem, however!

Seriously, it got in there, so must be able to come out.  In the past, I've slipped the filter off the cable tie so it becomes a separate entity, and it you can't wriggle it out of there, you might want to consider cutting this tie and replacing it.

Why Guzzi had to make it so tight, I've often wondered.

Good luck!

I've only had mine out 2x (or maybe it was once on the Sport, once on the Griso.  Same/same.)  I don't remember it being horribly difficult.  But at my age, everything in the past is viewed thru rose colored glasses!  Be patient and gentle.  It will come out.

The best part of riding a motorcycle is to tilt the horizon and to lift the front coming out of a corner and to drift the back end powering thru loose dirt and to catch a little air topping a hill and... yeah it's all good!

Here's the bulging fuel filter I took out. It lasted 10 years, time to retire it. Installed the Wix 33032 fuel filter that I picked up, not at an auto parts store (none of them had them) but at the local Ace hardware store. . .

Make sure you have the hoses clamped tight.! And if you ruin the hose to the filter, make sure you get submersible hose to replace it. Not a job I will ever do again.

They all bulge and seem to soften a bit, but how well the plastic part stays crimped in the metal is the key to whether they fail or not. Mine didn't stay crimped, others have and lasted a long time.

You should use Oetiker clamps on the fuel lines...
