Air Museum Suggestion
« on: April 01, 2018, 09:03:16 AM »
If anyone is going to be traveling through SW Kansas there is a little known but very good air museum in Liberal, KS. http://museumliberal.com/
Went there some years back on a Friday which is usually the slowest day there. A restoration mechanic took us behind the scenes in the shops and let us in a B-25 cockpit.

...very good air museum in Liberal, KS...

That's a good suggestion, John; the museum in Liberal is a nice one.  And, on that note, straight south from Liberal in Lubbock, Texas is the Silent Wings Museum devoted to military gliders of (mostly) world war 2.  There's an obvious connection to Wichita in that one and it, too, is a very good museum.

Both of those have been on my radar in years past. I used to try and go to one museum (air) a year during my travels. Europe has  a few that are really good especially the French ones.

I usually travel the back roads some going to CV and if I get there this year thinking of leaving I 40 in Tucumcari and making my way up thru TX into KS and had my eye on Liberal .
Could add it to my list!

Kirby, It's unrelated to airplanes (except for one disastrous moment), but Lubbock also has an excellent Buddy Holly museum (Lubbock being his home town and where he is buried).

Ha.  That one is the opposite of "little-known."  That's one of the best and largest air museums in the world (for military-only, I'd say it's the best).

Well, if that ain't precisely on my summer tour route between Oklahoma City and Denver. :)

Nice air museum in Galveston, TX, Lone Star Flight Museum.  Right across from Moody Gardens and close to Sea Wolf Park which has a genuine WWII submarine and a DE.  Between the three it's a good afternoon of well spent time.
Also, Fredericksburg,TX has the Museum of the Pacific War, formerly the Nimitz Museum, which is an outstanding museum.  In Austin, the Texas Military Forces museum at Camp Mabry close to downtown Austin is very good (and free).

Is there still an L. Starling Burgess designed biplane on a single pontoon there? A plane that would be let into the water and retrieved by a gantry.  I believe they were built in very small numbers (for the Navy), in Massachusetts. Burgess was better known for his sail boat designs. (They may have had Glenn Curtiss built engines).

BTW: The Glenn Curtiss Museum is in a really pretty part of NYS. Curtiss invented ailerons, landing gear and much more. He set a long standing top speed for motorcycles @ Daytona; having designed and built an air cooled V8 for it.   R3~

They've moved from Galveston and are now located at Ellington Field in the Clear Lake area of Houston near NASA.

The Dayton Air Force museum is one of the top five air museums in the USA, (IMHO).

..the Pima Air Museum in Tucson, AZ is also good...http://www.pimaair.org/ - - NOTE:  My Dad's old WW II group - 8th Air Force, 368 Bombardment Group has its own wing there as well.  :thumb:  :1:

In case everyone did not know: the Memphis Belle restorTion is complete and they are presenting the plane May 17-19. I hear that 10 B17s will be in and occasionally flying together around the Dayton area. Olive just  South of Dayton...

Back in the early 80s I attended a airshow in Topeka, KS that if you include most types of WWII military aircraft they did a 50 plane formation flyover led by three B-17s.
Will be two years in May that I took my B-17 ride out of Wichita.

View from the driver's seat. It's a very uncomplicated airplane.

My friend Larry flies one for the EAA. He says if there is a nasty gusting crosswind landing to be made, the Ford is the one to be doing it in.

That kind of surprises me when you look at the plane. High wing with low wing loading and slow approach speed does not seem to make a good crosswind plane but other factors must come into play?

There's also a very cool museum in Weatherford Oklahoma about an hour or so west of OKC on I-40.  It's the Tom Stafford Air and Space museum.  Mainly it's more space stuff since he was an astronaut involved in the Gemini and Apollo programs.  Moon rock too!  I think it's like $8 a ticket so very worth it.
