Gasoline Choices
« on: April 13, 2018, 10:03:30 AM »
I normally fill the v7 and the Norge with 93 octane, which of course has ethanol in it. A new gas station near me just opened and advertised ethanol free fuel. I went to check it out, and they have ethanol free in 87 octane only. Does anyone with experience think it's worth trying it out?

I would.   From my experience with the 17 internal combustion engines on my place here, IF it will run on 87 octane fuel without pinging, you are far better off with straight gas than any octane with ethanol in it.

This spring was like an Epiphany, a New Life.   ALL of my equipment from my tractors to lawnmowers to chain saws to weed-eaters to motorcycles fired up on the first few turns .... ethanol-free fuel with Marine Sta-bil in it.   First time in years I haven't had to take apart 4 carburetors to get to work or on the road!

It may not ping but you might not like the power output. I filled the EV up w/87 non ethanol and didn't like the power so I put in a few gal of 93 ethanol w/level permitted more.

First off , what octane rating does the owner's manual call for ? Second , remember that in America we rate octane differently than all of Europe , our 87 = Euro 89 . Third , octane rating has nothing to do with how much energy a gallon of gasoline contains , 87 has the same amount as 93 .

I find it hard to believe that a low compression engine with soft cam timing needs anything more than our 87 octane .

To piggy back on this. Using a higher octane than needed may actually be detrimental to a motor in the form of deposits from unburned or not completely burned fuel. The only reason to use a fuel with a higher octane rating is if you are experiencing ping/knocking and/or predetonation.

(RON+MON)/2 is how gasoline octane is noted in The USA.

The only times I've run 87 in my Guzzis was when in the boondocks and 87 was all they had. Under load, they'll ping, so have to be ridden easy.

91 is the most common premium grade, here, and that's what I run. No problems,  no worries.

As I recall, the manual on my bike notes 95 RON recommendation for fuel.  That works out to 90/91 (RON+MON)/2 in The USA.
