Final Drive Oil ?
« on: May 09, 2018, 09:21:48 PM »
Every shaft-drive bike I ever owned spec'd an 80-something-90 or an 85 grade or something really close to that - for the final drive.

Then I got a V7 III and the owner's manual spec'd an 80W-140.  Yes, 140.

OK, now that I have this Cali 1400, it wants 80W-90 for the transmission and 80W-90 the final drive.

I have four bottles of shaft drive oil with a picture of a Gold Wing on them.  I don't care if it IS a Moto Guzzi.

The transmission is getting 75W-90.   Mobil 1, I think...but let me check my stash.....   :thumb:

I find (after a lot of study) that the specification of the oil that belongs in my engine, transmission, and final drive has very little correlation with what kind of bikes I USED TO have, or what kind of picture is on the bottle of oil on my shelf (whether it be a Gold Wing, an airplane, or a Velo-Solex).

I just look in the manual, find out what spec and weight of oil to use, and put that in my bike.

Unfortunately, that doesn't give me the opportunity to start any interesting discussions on line, so maybe I'm missing out on something .... ?

I was trying to be funny, but (evidently) I'm not very good at it.

Another interesting tidbit - the 2017 V7 III owner's manual recommends Castrol;  The 2017 Cali book recommends AGIP

It's whatever mfg. that wins the oil contract for the year. But I'd stick with the 85/140. Mobil 1 is usually available at most auto parts.

I have NO problems finding 80-140, or 75-90... my issue is finding the damn 10-60.

I got a recommendation right here on this forum......  there was a place that was closing out this oil for $20/jug so I got 2 jugs and $8 total shipping.

That's 8 liters for $48.  Delivered to my front door.

It appears that there is more available and in other grades, also

Buying oil at the dealer is INSANE.

I found a NAPA on 50th in Edmonton that carried 10-60 in 4L jugs... but I don't live there anymore.  :sad

Tell me about it...

Granted I have not look too hard around BC, but so far I can’t get a hit on something cheaper and more accessible...

I actually use this in my LM3 transmission and really like it.  For my final drive, I use the Moto Guzzi brand 80W-90 with moly already added.

For a Canadian supplier with free shipping  (orders over  $49 Cdn), you might try fortnine.  You won't get 8 liters of 10w 60 for $48 US.  You won't even get 4 liters.  But you will get free shipping.

BMW car dealers have 10w-60.  An older model of theirs used to use it.  Former the dealer near me sold Castrol 10w-60 economically, but they've since switched to BMW branded 10w-60 at a "BMW price"

I continue to find this *Problem* finding oil in the US baffling. I mean I live in a tiny town in rural NSW in Oz. My closest ‘Regional Center’ is Queanbeyan 20km away and then the industrial suburb of Canberra called Fyshwick is 25km away.

Despite being the National Capital, Canberra is really just a big country town with a population of <400,000 but I can walk in to just about any ‘Wottalottacrap Auto’ type shop, (NAPA, Pep Boys, etc.) and they have an inexhaustible cascade of different oil types and weights on the shelf from a vast range of manufacturers!

Why is it so hard in the most developed country in the world with a population that dwarfs ours! It’s bonkers!!!

Can this conversation be narrowed down to as long as the gear oil is within the weight range and has MOLY it’s ok to use in my 1400 tourer??

No.  This has never happened in the history of oil threads.
 :thumb:

But, I'm having a question..... does the AGIP/ENI stuff have moly in it?   I went for a cursory look-see and did not find that in the description.  They have some gear oil selection with moly - but not the stuff that we're using.

Here's the product brochure

https://www.eni.com/en_NA/attachments/pdf/i-sigma-brochure.pdf

In my case, I don't know if I've ever used a gear oil that had moly in it.  Many manufacturers use a moly assembly paste in the drive units, and the first drain/refill is black black black.  But the refill is typically not infused with moly.  And even if it was - I'm not sure that the new extreme pressure add packs aren't actually better than some of the older recipes with a touch of moly.

There is some excellent information available at
www.bobistheoilguy. com

Subforums on greases, oils, etc.   Real world analysis of used oil samples.

Next opinion, please.

In my mind - if it meets the spec, then use it.

Owners swore by the AGIP/ENI specified lubricants for some time - and now that Guzzi is recommending CASTROL....
what to do - what to do.

Oil and general lubrication is 95% marketing and 98% opinion.
Personally, I have no brand name loyalty.

I've check our local AutoZone, Pep Boys, NAPA, and Advance Auto, and none of them have 10W/60 oil on the shelf.

So I just buy mine with a single click online and its on my doorstep in a couple of days, I buy enough for a year's riding at a time.

However, the times when I've said "Why doesn't everyone just do that rather than moaning about 'it's not available'?", the Canadians rise up as one and tell me that you can't get 10W60 oil shipped to Canada

So who knows?   I just click, and in two days a hustling young guy in brown shorts hands me 2 or 3 gallons of it ....

Oil for Canadians!

Corsa Meccanica in Greater Toronto is importing ENI from the USA. Give them a call if you're still looking for 10w-60, 85w-90, or 85w-140.

The story I heard (unverified) is that ENI pulled out of the Canadian market for some reason. Although their industrial lubricants are still available through some distributors, the automotive/motorcycle oils are not. None of the industrial distributors I contacted had 10w-60.

I wonder if their branch in Vancouver does the same...

Most of Canadian stores carry items mostly for truck & car only...

That leaves motorcycle products to the dealers...however a lot of dealers do not want to stock bulk quantities as storage space is freakish valuable here in West coast.

I think we are lucky having Penrite based in Oz Pete. Not only can I wander down to my local Supercheap and pick up 10/60 with full zinc loading but also any of the gear oils required as well. My vintage car nut bro can grab oils specific for vintages. One of the agents in Chch (who is a vintage car nut) was telling me that making oddball oils for oddball vehicles is built in to their whole ethos. Suits me. :thumb:
