My Dad always was able to restrain himself when necessary. He used to tell me not to feel like you had to be the one to deal out justice. That justice would usually catch up with those who deserved it. Sounds like this ass wipe is a perfect example. You played it right , anyone low enough to do that will certainly create his own miserable existence. I'm glad he wasn't a tobacco chewer! You took one for the team and did the Guzzi community proud.  Well played!

Being on a bike and thinking of retaliation is not a situation I want to be in.  Something that has served me well is you don’t f$&k with mass...

I like the idea of reporting the plate to the police but I doubt they would do anything. I live in a town in Connecticut that has a large police force and a chief that gets paid more than the UCONN police chief. Today I came across a large amount of fluid across an intersection and the car pulled over not far down the road. Looked like oil or antifreeze and the first thing I thought of was some poor guy or gal on a bike going down. Immediately pulled into a parking lot and called the police and asked them to check it out. The dispatcher said it was a state road and he would notify them. Lazy freaking a holes have about 6 cops on duty and the department is a half a mile down the road.

This is exactly what I say to bicyclists in the city who don’t ride defensively and justify it with “but I had the right of way!”.

Growing up many a farm dog displayed road rage every time you drove or rode in front of their place. Would chase your vehicle barking like mad.

That happens a lot less often than we think it does.

And the throwing of ball bearings and spark plugs through offenders windshields by motorcyclists, as well as the kicking in of car doors, probably actually has happened over the years about once for every 10,000 times it's mentioned on the Internet ... if that.

I recognize that I'm not going to fight an F450 Ford with my 600 Bandit ... but I agree with Rough Edge Racing that you're not doing the world any favors by meekly accepting bullying.   If Mr. Tough Guy is sitting in his pickup at the curb and spits on you in the parking lot, does that pass?   Seems to be a question no one wants to answer, but that's OK because it IS an answer ....

There are layers to assault that involve insulting or degrading actions.  For example, slapping a grown man is more offensive than hitting him with a closed fist.  Spitting on someone is, IMHO, just the lowest of the low.  Other than whipping it out and pissing on a guy I can't think of a more offensive, insulting act.

I don't know what I would have done but it would have enraged me.  I think I would have followed him until he stopped and gotten off my bike to confront him.  I know that's a stupid thing to do but being spit on simply isn't something I could let slide.  I don't consider myself a Billy Badass or anything but there are some things so insulting they warrant a confrontation(verbally at the very least).

You did the right thing by ignoring it.  However, punching the side mirror off his vehicle at the next stop light would have been understandable and appropriate response as well.  I'll probably get a lot of responses with some clucking, shaking of heads and wagging of fingers but that's my two cents.

There is the dilemma: how to respond to bad behavior that warrants a spanking without the confrontation ending in violence and death. Go for it and hope for the best, or turn the other cheek? I do have guns. Perhaps the spitter does too. We could try grappling first, and then fisticuffs, and then rocks and sticks, and then knives, and then guns...

I do not have a good answer, other than for me in that situation to simply let it go.

The other day at the Walmart store near us, a pastor shot a violent car-jacker dead. The pastor absolutely did the right then, and many people around here are glad he was carrying that day. In his situation, the choice was clear to protect the life of the innocent car owner faced with death.

But what is a little spittle between commuters?

It depends on your age, mindset and where you are as to your response. It happened to me long time ago in a city I lived in. I got the guy to follow me and set him up to attack me off the bike planning to execute him in self defense . I gave him an out and he didn't take the final bait .I was fascinated by how easy it was.I'd probly be out of prison by now. I learned something and wouldn't handle it the same way now, mostly you never know what you will do until it happens. My advise is don't respond if you don't have to, you'll never see them again.

North of here, near my wife's uncle's farm... there's a farmer that hangs a fake body from a noose in his front yard, and has trained his dogs to *literally attack* vehicles.  Not chase, not bark at... attack. I shudder to think what would happen if someone rode a motorcycle past his place, or got a flat tire near it.

Dude's a psycho. What the hell is wrong with some people?

sad part is, the dogs will be the ones that lose their life, when they are just doing what they are trained to do, and to make their owner happy.

More usually it's the people responsible for the dog that are stupid.   Dogs generally want to do what their people want them to do ... been that way ever since the first wild canines edged up to the fire and were tossed a bone in return for alerting the tribe of intruders and helping them hunt.

If dogs are ignored, or see their people doing stupid things, or are abused, then they'll come up with something to do all on their own ... and "protect the tribe" by chasing anything moving that doesn't belong ....

...I've been around dogs, cats, chickens for a long time...They all have different temperament and personalities. Even the chickens with a brain the size of you thumbnail have their individual traits...I'm not saying a dog or any animal can't be affected by a stupid or cruel owner...But some animals are just bad to the bone right out of the womb or egg.. And some others are so smart it's scary...

I don't know what part of the country we're talking about, but that situation needs some cleaning up.  Not always fun to do, but town officials can be helpful when there is a real menace and they see liability somewhere $$$$$$.  Sometimes it takes some finding and pointing out, but I've had good luck with small town officials who want what's best for their neighbors.

Western Canada. We're a vast, wide open space, and rural policing is stretched extremely thin these days, with much larger issues at hand. Things are getting... tense in many rural areas.

Some folks are taking that idea to heart lately... thing is... it isn't making anything better. Plus, a lot of the folks that are taking it to heart... aren't exactly the kind of folks to be making snap judgements.

All the good things I've heard about riding in Canada ... and now all of our Western Canada Guzzi riders are telling us about the kookie rednecks there that will sic a dog on us or run us down with their trucks and put it on Facebook?

That doesn't sound like much fun.
