Oshkosh pix because Dusty sez so..
« on: July 31, 2018, 06:45:46 PM »
Scale B17. Yes, the guy built it and flew it to OSH from Illinois. Obviously,  too much time on his hands.

The Black fly prototype. Has several hours of flight time with a human piloting it. Vertical take off and landing. (!)

I flew the simulator, and it was intuitive and easy to fly. Possibly a breakthrough? Time will tell.
More as Flickr loads.

This is a "modern" cnc manufactured Gnome rotary engine. People are recreating some WW1 aeroplanes, and need a powerplant. The rotaries run at full throttle. There is no carburetor. engine speed is controlled by cutting off ignition to 2 or more cylinders. You can hear that happening here..

Yeah, Doc was flying all week, along with uncounted warbirds.

It's cool that rotary engines are being reproduced. They have a unique sound. I would imagine all that rotating mass would make a plane snap quickly to one side while hampering its ability to roll quickly to the other side. (Torque) I was fortunate to hear some rotaries run at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome a few years back. Rhinebeck should be on anybodies bucket list that likes aviation and old planes that still get flown.

That's some cool stuff, Chuck!  Thanx!

Not sure why someone would call such an interesting craft the "Black Fly"....  Bit of a negative connotation to me, 'tho easily overlooked if I could get some seat time in it!  My understanding is it's an electric ultralight?  So no license?  Sounds VERY interesting!

Thanks again!

Yes, it is an ultralight. Limited to 62 mph by regulation. 80 something in Canada, eh? Don't get me started on that "everyman's flying car" thing, though. I see way too many idiots that can't even keep a car between the lines on the road  much less adding a third dimension.
I love the concept, however. I'm sure I couldn't have sat in a VR simulator for a helicopter for more than a few seconds without it ending up on it's side beating itself to death. This was *easy* to fly. Comparatively inexpensive to anything else that has the capability of vertical take off/landing.
Practical? Not yet.

Anyone remember this, the rotary-engine motorcycle?

There is not much innovation any more. I guess it is related to the dumbing down of the country in general.. there are seas of "kit built" airplanes where all the thinking is done for you.
The last Storch light aircraft I remember seeing at OSH was maybe 10 years ago, and it had a Rotax in it. Friends don't let friends fly two strokes.. :boozing: The only Guzzi I've ever seen was driving the prop through the transmission. (!) Not a good idea..

There used to be a company called Arizona Airscrew that either had a gear reduction for Guzzis or tried to run a prop off the cam, a screwy idea too

My two sons and I rode up from Milwaukee on Saturday to see the airshow. We didn’t go in this year but parked the bikes on the other side of Whitman. The”box” was right overhead.

The proof of concept vehicle was all black, and pretty crude looking. I didn't think to take a picture of it.

Around here & points north blackfly is a 4 letter word, especially in the spring....  ;^)   But like I said, I'd be willing to overlook the moniker - this thing is just kewl!

i think I may be the target demographic for these - 25 mile rural/ urban commute, no license but pass the test & take the training, amphibious too - I think I want one....  I'd build a "solar shed" for it like they show in the propaganda foto's, but taking up 2 parking spaces at work might be an issue....  Well, that and the $$....

You said the sim was intuitive & "easy" - single stick?

Some REALLY neat stuff out there - my Dad always wanted to go to the Fly-In, never got there, mebbe one day I'll get there, for old times' sake....  I'd like to see a P-38 in the flesh.
