Bosch starter rebuild question
« on: August 08, 2018, 01:04:17 PM »
Hello Folks, I am in the process of rebuilding the Bosch starter on my Cal II. I have the bushing/brushes from euromoto electrics.
My question is whats the best way to remove/install the bushings? Is a hydraulic press necessary? I have seen the starter rebuild tutorials here,  but didnt see anything about replacing the bushings.
Any tips or tricks you like to share, much appreciated.
Thanks
Rick.

You can use appropriately sized sockets and a vise to do the same thing as a press.

I have no clue to what you need to do to fix the old starter.

I did buy a new starter for $67 delivered to my house.

https://www.dbelectrical.com/products/moto-guzzi-starter-0307307110-30730710-30730711.html#app-list

I also have the old starter I took off the Sport which I believe is totally fine-  I just needed a battery.   :embarrassed:

As Charlie sez

Pre-lube the new bush like this, before you install it.
Block one end with forefinger, fill with oil then squeeze it between thumb and forefinger, oil will seep out the pores in the metal and it's good to go.

BTW I just use engine oil in the bushes, there may be something better.

Did you notice signs of the armature rubbing on pole pieces?

Thanks Charlie. I will try that, this afternoon. I had no idea a new Guzzi starter was available for 67 bucks! I was going to rebuild the Bosch in my  85 LeMans, after I did this one, but for the rebuild kit comes out to about 20 bucks, I may just try that cheapo starter for the LeMans. Is it a valeo clone? I bet it draws less juice, and maybe even spins faster.
Thanks again,
Rick.

Hi Roy, no the armature has not rubbed on the pole pieces. The bushing in the nose cone of the starter looks new, but the one under the "cap" was very hard to remove from the armature shaft, and it got very scored in the process of wiggling the end cap of the starter to get it apart.
thanks,
Rick.

I don't know why everyone thinks the Valeos draw less current and are faster, the one on my VII Sport drew ~170 Amps and it turned over like an old DC3

I say a Bosch will outlast a Valeo any day. :weiner:

The $67 starter looks like a Valeo clone, it doesn't have the large screws mid way along the body that retain the series pole pieces, at a guess I would say it has a smaller motor with planetary gearbox.

Sounds like your Valeo had some big problems! Every Valeo I've had spins the engine faster than the Bosch ever did.

I, too, fitted a $70 Valeo Clone to my V50.  It not only cranks faster than the OE Bosch, but also saves about 10 lbs. over that boat-anchor-heavy device. No problems to date.

"10 lbs."  A Valeo is lighter, but let's not get carried away with hyperbole...

Admittedly, I did not do an exact weight comparison on a scale. But holding the two units in my hands, it seemed that the weight difference was major, I estimated in the range of 10 lbs or so.  Not trying to be hyperbolic (that's a job for a political figure), but the Valeo clone is a LOT lighter than the Bosch.

I bought one of the cheap ($75) ebay Valeo "clones" for the Le Mans 1000 project that "mcdammit" now owns. The box it came in read: "Made in China" and there was a sticker on the starter itself with the same thing.

The original starter motor is 10 lbs

The original V7 Sport starter without the solenoid is lighter at 5.2 lbs.

I think the cheap Valeo clones out of China are around 6 lbs, I have rebuilt a couple of the old Bosch heavy weights but the cost of a solenoid, bearings etc makes buying the lighters cheap new ones very appealing.

Who knows where genuine Valeos are built these days? France?? Brazil? China?

I'll bet the same Chinese factory offering the copies also makes originals for Valeo. From what I've seen, they look identical with label removed.

If there's a difference, it's probably in quality control.

I installed one for a customer recently and it was made in Hungary.

I agree. Put one on my '98 EV11 two months ago...no problems.
