Front wheel cover removed from MGX - I like it
« on: August 29, 2018, 02:27:16 PM »
Trying something new.  Seems a shame to cover up that nice wheel, but both looks are nice. I think I like this look better.

I like it too , Luap. It makes the front wheel look bigger, more "custom". :thumb:
I always wondered what was under those covers.

That fixes my only aesthetic issue with the bike.

1) How hard was it to do?
2) How noticeable (ugly) are the attachment points on the wheel?

never noticed that cover until now...

Guess I was too distracted by the Darth Vader fairing :P

Any idea why the cover was there in the first place?

Not too hard. #5 hex head and some elbow grease. They are obviously glued in, but it's no more torque to remove them than the brake caliper bolts.  I loosened, grabbed the cordless drill and had them off within 5 minutes total. That's with even removing the discs.

As for the mount points, I stole an idea from another I seen like this and painted them red to match the other splashes of red on the bike. I like the look a lot.

Looks better and might even handle better.

I've only had a chance to ride it about 20 miles today. No noticable change so far, but I suspect in those +15 mph side winds I'll notice a huge difference. I'll let you all know in 10 days how it went when I finish up my 3,500 mile round trip.

Any idea why the cover was there in the first place?

No idea. I can speculate looks though, because if it had any type of function, it would be a surprise to me.

Now it'll be nothing but wheelies all day long!

Hehe. I don't see that happening.

Looks good,  if only it had a bigger motor.

Hehe. Wanna run em?  1/8, 1/4, mile, 100 miles?  Let's line em up

Lightens up the appearance of the bike to me. :)

Yep, at least 2 lbs lighter :-)

It looks faster

 Dusty

Dang right!  I think it gives it a more upright look. 11,000 miles with it on, think I'll leave it off for 11K and see what kind of difference I might notice.

Agreed.  I think it improves the look of an already stunning bike. :thumb:

Thanks!

Having had an MGX-21 for 2 yrs I have to humbly disagree. While not unacceptable it vacates an area where the carbon effect is complete & different from any other m/c on the road.

If you ever think about filling the mounting points,  a visit to ProBolt for red/black anodized aluminum bolts would probably look sano.

I like the look both ways.  But, I'm not going to pretend that in 15+ mph side winds that the front wheel with the inserts doesn't act like a big parachute here where I'm at, and getting ready to ride 3,500 miles or so round trip in some pretty windy country, I want to take all the precautions I can.  It's manageable, but after riding today in some pretty windy stuff, I noticed a huge difference...for the better.

I'll probably put it back on at some point. That's what's nice about this bike.  There's so many different ways you can configure it and tailor it to your personality, it's great.

Laup, the one thing I noticed (after having a HD Ultra & RK w/windshield on & not experiencing this) was that I had to definately prepare when passing trucks of any size @ speeds over 50mph & especialy at interstate speeds with an oscilating front end. Not slight but definately an attention getter. It was high up fairing/hdlbrs affected. Didn't feel down low frontal.
What's been your experience?

PS....winds,you have winds? Here in western NV below the Sierras we get what's called the Washoe Zepher year round. 10-20mph common with gusts to 40-70 (hurricane cat 1) mph blowing over semis & RV's. We have 3 seasons; summer 56 days straight over 90 incl 16 over 100, winter & wind.
Don't have tornadoes or rain here tho like where you're at. We get 3-4 inches of rain a year.
Hope to be back riding the Appalachians where I rode 40 yrs by this time next year.

The winds here aren't too bad. But like you say, they will get your attention and can increase the "pucker factor".  This bike in general has very few openings to allow side wind to pass through as it is, so I'll take what I can get. Couple that with the fact I like the front wheel open and it's a double win. FWIW, I inquired about removing that cover long before I got the bike. It looks 'okay' with it on, but it looks more 'okayer' with it off.

I'm about to hit these states starting tomorrow: Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado so I don't really want to be fighting too many side-winds, I'd rather enjoy the ride.  Besides, I can't see the cover when I'm riding the bike anyhow  :thumb:
