NGC, does anyone's dog lick their wood stove?
« on: September 18, 2018, 04:48:51 PM »
While the stove is cold, of course...

As I'm writing this, my rat terrier "Dum Dum" (actually, my wife's dog, I resisted forcefully until she drove 8 hrs round trip to get him, against my wishes and without telling me, just like that last time I dragged a non-running Guzzi home.... payback is hell, they say ) is licking my cast-iron wood stove like it was covered in steak grease.

He's been doing it all summer, and what's worse, our older dog (another rat terrier) has picked up the habit. Kind of drives me nuts, and yes, we DO feed them.

Any thoughts?

Count your blessings.  There's a terrier/harp seal mix in Ohio that is -um- *REALLY* good friends with the cat.  Very loud and distracting several times a day.  I'd take a picture, but it would violate WG rules.

Rub your wood stove down with a mountain lion. The dog will run for the hills.

Your dog is jonesing for some good brisket or other BBQ.  Seriously, though, as a DVM I have heard plenty of people with dogs who lick carpets, furniture legs, the television...if it is within reach, some dog is going to develop an OCD behavior and lick it.  Oftentimes the dog will target itself and lick a hole on the top of its wrist--not allergy licking at feet, which is super common-- but right there where your dog would normally wear its watch.  It would be extremely rare, though super fascinating, if your dog were anemic (easy to check at your vet) and was hankering for iron.  Does he like ice cubes?  This is evidently common in humans with iron-deficiency anemia; they will crunch ice cubes to no end.  Maybe in January he will show an affinity for ice cubes after he licks the stove.

Your dog doesn't wear a watch?  Neither does mine, but he loves to show my male cat a good time.  Thanks for outing Louie, David.  Though it does mean your leg wasn't accosted while you were working in my garage...

Dogs will lick just about anything including rotted dead stuff and turds...So licking a woodstove is just part of their routine..

Dogs doing this sort of thing... eating turds, eating grass, licking stuff... usually indicates something missing in their diet. What they get off the outside of a stove? I dunno… maybe their just weird.

But, something to think about.

Just a wild ass thought, but is it possible the dog has something in its tongue? Does he do it after eating? If so possibly something in his food leaves an after taste or a change in his ph that hes trying to correct? I do like the thought of earlier posters about something missing in his diet. If it’s iron try giving him raisins, raw spinach, or black strap nonsulfinated molasses, all high in iron.

Maybe he's just trying to get the taste out of his mouth from licking his arse.

If the stove top is anything like the one in my first share house, I don't think I'd be opting for the case iron...!

It would be extremely rare, though super fascinating, if your dog were anemic (easy to check at your vet) and was hankering for iron.  Does he like ice cubes?  This is evidently common in humans with iron-deficiency anemia; they will crunch ice cubes to no end.

My wife has had the dog's blood tested, not sure if it was tested for anemia, but I'll ask. My WIFE had an INSANE ice-crunching habit for a good 6-months, up until about 6 mo ago. I don't believe she changed her diet, but I'll ask her about that, too. Ice-crunching is over for now, thank god.

Both dogs get well-balanced meals, wife sees to that.

Dog liked ice cubes, but I think that was more play than anything else. Like I said, I call him Dum Dum.
