Doing away with Tapatalk soon...
« on: November 06, 2018, 07:18:50 AM »
I'm in the process of converting this site to allow a more mobile friendly look for those who like to use their phones or tablets. When that's done, I'll be doing away with the Tapatalk converter. There are bugs in Tapatalk that I've never liked, and it uses more resources than I like. I've also never been a big fan of 3rd party apps piggy-backing off of things.

This will all be happening this week at some point.  Stay tuned...

I used to love Tapatalk on my iPhone 5, it was great for catching up on my commute but since upgrading to an iPhone 6 it's become so difficult with streaming adds that use up all my data.

I won't be sorry to see it go

I've basically got two forums I engage. One for each of my costly areas of interest, Motos and Guitars. Tried tapatalk way back when, and quickly abandoned the experiment. On my phone I simply keep a tap open in the browser (chrome) and refresh 'unread posts'. Works a treat.

Can't say it enough, thanks Luap for keeping after it in terms of maintaining the technology and 'ecosystem' we all enjoy.

I liked it, I have lots of interests, belong to lots of forums...

really a easy way to browse all of them, but typically I dont spend much time on them during the summer.

Ducati
Vintage motorcycles
Moto Guzzi
Cafe racers
Mustangs
Miatas
mountain biking & dirt jumping
ADV forum
Autocross

but this forum I typically visit from work.

tapatalk makes it really easy to upload pics from your phone.

I tried it, then stopped.

The only real drawback of using the webpage is the tiny type face showing the author of each post (not to mention Roper's use of a nearly invisible yellow font for some reason). If you fix that with the new version, I can't imagine any complaints at all! Good move.

I've enjoyed Tapatalk, and have it on our SoCal PGR site.  Always seemed stable enough to me, although we have other issues with the automated email on an SMF forum - but that's a whole other issue.

I find it handy, but if it's causing you issues, then who am I to complain?

As long as the new mobile friendly site keeps the stark black and white, high contrast readability, I'm golden with what ever  you do.

Ok. The mobile conversion is complete. If you have a smartphone, check out the new look. Or, you can even "scrunch" your screen size on your computer too, and that will give you an idea of how it looks mobile.

That said, the TapaTalk app has been disabled.

Thanks,

I never said it was "gone". I said it's been disabled. I'll completely eliminate when I finish finding all the bits and pieces this thing has attached itself to.

Mobile (Iphone) views are still a little wonky, seems to have compressed the columns a bit and stacked the information...will give it a few more days to see if it settles down.

Yep, it's hard to fit all that information onto a little screen. It's as good as it's going to get I'm afraid.

Actually it was working perfectly on the Iphone before the change, everything was nicely formatted on the screen, no weird column compression before.

But not a big deal...thanks again.

Er..no. Text is about 0.75mm. I now have to zoom in to read it. I normally use Chrome, but as there is no way to adjust font-per-website, I'll either have to zoom or change browsers and futz with settings. Inconvenient.

I like the layout better on my Android phone.

If possible, it would be great to have the text of messages wrap to the next line when a window is made narrower. As it is, I have to zoom out to see each line of text as a whole, and the type face is then almost impossible to read, on my phone.

I know it must be frustrating to deal with programs over which you don't have complete control.

But thanks for all your efforts.

Bummer. I much prefer Tapatalk, better format, multiple forums in one place, instant hosting and linking of photos.

Ironically this new format is much worse on my Android. On some threads I now have to zoom out (making text unreadable) to see the full text on each line or manually scroll the screen back and forth in each line to see it all.

I haven't figured out the pattern yet.

Just like motorcycles I reckon. No two are alike and the results of each differ. I've done all I can do to make it useable across platforms. If it don't work out for you, sorry. I can't do anymore for it.  So, it is what it is.

Tapatalk is great for the end user, but a complete and utter nightmare for me. It's a constant hassle, constant hack attempts keeping me way more busy than I care to be lately. For an app, it sure used a ton of resources. I had no choice.
