Cedar Vale to Black Hills - Any fun routes recommended?
« on: November 11, 2018, 07:18:08 PM »
Thinking of tacking on a week of extra riding after Cedar Vale next year and slowly working up to South Dakota to see the Badlands, Black Hills and Western Nebraska on the way back before returning to Houston.

Any must ride roads along the way you guys can recommend?

That's been my route.  Could be a might chilly that time of year.

Geez, there is not much along that route. I have always wanted to stop at the Harold Warp (?) museum in Minden, NB. The Museum of the Fur Trade outside Chadron, NB is good. State route 2 is a good way to get across Nebraska.

Oh yea Thedford. Got framed there on a Sunday in the 1970s when traveling through. Left $200 poorer but no record. Let's just say another good campfire story.

There's very nice state park less than 10 miles south of Chadron on U.S. 385: Chadron State Park.

It is in a hilly area, and is modestly developed with a pool and other facilities, including cabins that you should reserve ahead of time, a good choice for chilly weather (the elevation is higher in the park, reaching nearly 5000 feet compared with 3400 feet in the town of Chadron).

One great benefit of a stop there, if you're so inclined, is the very dark night sky. I was able to see the Andromeda Galaxy with my naked eyes there (using averted vision, that is, looking slightly off to the side of its location). That galaxy has an apparent size as big as the full moon, but is very dim. Binoculars should be in your luggage if you want to enjoy the stars as much as possible. This area of Nebraska is famous for dark skies among stargazers.

Moto

From their website: "Chadron State Park has 22 cabins available for rental. Cabins are air conditioned, heated and furnished with blankets, towels, stoves, refrigerators, silverware and cooking utensils."

I'd definitely consider Custer State Park.  There are cabins and lodges there.

I was on the Platte near Kearney one time when the sand hill cranes were migrating. Quite a scene.

I once camped on a lake south of N Platte IIRC.  Folks had fishing poles in the water right on the campsites.

I'll elaborate just a bit.
In Australia we pronounce "route" like "root"...
Does that tell you anything about where this is headed..?
Come in Wyno, throw me a freaking bone here will you...?

While we are rooting around discussing how we pronounce route , and attempting to slip in some alternate meaning of the word which most of us are already cognizant of , we should be made aware that route is pronounce root by most of us , unless we are discussing routers , either the power tool or the computer ancillary device , which of course takes us down a different route altogether .
