Engine Builder
« on: November 14, 2018, 01:40:18 PM »
Looking for a solid rebuilder to rebuild my '78 850 LeMans motor and trans.  Basically a cleanup and refresh and possibly new cam and light head work.   RH cyl head has a couple bent fins from a tip over that need fixing.  Sounds like Mike Rich is off the table due to too much work on his plate already.  I'm east coast/Mid Atlantic.    Bike runs and starts but has been sitting for 15 yrs

Thanks for any suggestions.  Brad

Thanks to all.   Ironically, I'm less than 90 minutes from Antietam's location.   Drove past the exit for his hamlet for my kids lax tournament last weekend.

And thank you for the welcome.   This is a bucket list bike...missed a shot at one 10 yrs ago.   Great community here.  Read every post of Canuck's 850LM resto.

Congrats on the Mk1 LeMans!    That's also a bucket list bike for me, and fortunately for me, I was able to procure one this year as well!
Mine has sat for several years, so, I'll be doing the usually re-commissioning work on it over the winter.

Canuck's former 850LM is now residing outside Philly, out 90 min. from me.    So, that's 3 new Mk1 Le Mans in the Mid-Atlanatic region!

I see a couple of Ducatis in your pic, as well as, something interesting with a British-looking twin?

Yeah...that's not my garage.  The gentleman I bought it from had quite a collection--a serious Ducati addict along with other special bikes.   A seriously slippery slope hanging out with him.  Some of his Ducati singles started looking pretty interesting.   I had to get out of there with just the LM and a 74 750GT my buddy picked up.

Thought this one might be near-ready to ride with fresh tires and fluids, but...knowing it sat that long and finding a dewey trans/oil pan I figured I might as well clean it up and get all the seals replaced and check the bores.  And if in there...why not swap in a perkier cam, etc.

Forks have no damping in them...shocks the same.  Looks like I've got a nice little winter project.   Really appreciate all the collective knowledge here.

Another vote for Charlie's shop in Maryland. He did the top end on my 83 Le Mans about 6000 miles ago. The bike has never run stronger.

The 850 LM already has a pretty perky cam, you might start to sacrifice low end grunt if you go any perkier.

The 850 Le Mans cam is the same as the T3/SP/etc. Not much perky about it. A B10 would be a step up.

Oh, I'd have thought it had a more aggressive cam.    Did the later 850 (LM3) have a more aggressive cam?

I don't have Guzziology in front of me to check, but I don't think so. IIRC, the Le Mans 1000 was the first to use a more "radical" cam and that was a B10.

Yup. Lawnmower and B-10 are about it until the lemans 1000. The B-10 was available for the 850 Lemans as part of a race kit along with 40mm carbs and exhaust if I remember correctly.
There are options. I went with a megacycle X-9 cam on my 850T because #1- I'm super lazy didn't want to mess with the valve springs / heads , #2, I had a plan in the works to aquire a guzzi with a crazy motor, and most importantly #3 - I got the mild cam cheap on E-bay.

There are many who say the X-9 is a half measure etc. I like it in my 850 T. You get a more grunt and it pulls nicely to about 7500 rpm.
I don't know if the B-10 is more aggressive or equal to the X-9. There are several of choices.
My lemans 1000 has an X7 cam and it idles like a dragster.
