Couple of His 'n Hers Ambos on CL
« on: January 20, 2019, 02:40:55 PM »
Check out the mileage on each:

https://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/mcy/6790719260.html

62k and 82k on the clocks, my first thought is how they fared that long on chrome bores, but either they BOTH were converted to Gilardonis or re-lined, OR someone forgot to tell them that the bores were chrome and they just kept riding them.

I like the overall effect with the Wixom luggage and police windscreen. Never could stand those types of saddles, but then, I suppose they ARE functional. Funny pinstriping turns me off, too, but I could live with it since the sheet metal is otherwise stock (looking).

Overall, I LIKE the presentation. MIGHT be a good deal for (2) without titles at a significantly lower price.

Note the other vintage bikes in the photos....I see an SP like the one in a current discussion here that owns the Score of 2019 award (so far).

Chrome bores last a long time if run regularly. It long periods of inactivity that create issues. My 72 Eldo sat idle in a covered out building for 19 years before we found one another. When I talked with the guy selling it for his long deceased father he said he was going to try to get it running before got there. I gently let him know that if he hit the starter button my offer would be cut in 1/2. I then told him about what chrome lined bores.

I got the bike home and pulled the cylinders. One cylinder was perfect. The other was perfect except for a dime sized flake of chrome that peeled away and was laying on the top of the piston.

Chrome bores MAY last a while if run regularly?, but wasn't my experience. I bought a NEW Eldorado in 1973. Drove it daily rain or shine for nearly 2 years, a little more than 22k and the bores flaked. New bike, never sat, flaked chrome. Granted it seems that flaking is a certainty but I would argue it's not only due to sitting. Just my 2 cents.

If they're In Port Washington with that group of bikes in the background, I would expect that it is Sonny.  He was part of the Berliner scene and then later Ghost Motorcycles.  Italian bikes are his thing and I've bought a number of Ducati parts from him since the 90's.

However, the price seems low for him.  He's usually not inexpensive....

With respect to Sonny, and his orientation to higher prices, these key words from the Craitgslist ad may be explanatory:

As far as the prices:

I initially was agape at the seemingly low price (6k for 2), but that equates to 3k each, at an average of 71k miles, unknown service history, no titles, and a likely chance that they're chrome bores. The Wixom baggage adds ~$400 if sold separately with mounts, so you COULD figure a straight, stock, chrome-bore Ambo non-runner with no title for $2600.....right on the cusp of deal/no deal.

I still like them. I'd like them both for $5k.

I saw this in the ad and wondered if that's how he got them or if he himself had passed away.  He had an early XK Jag on eBay last year that he said was a longtime personal project he was selling for health reasons.

Sent an e-mail to the seller asking about the titles and condition of the bikes, got a response saying the titles were a non-issue (that's what everyone selling a bike without a title says!), and these days, it kind of is, there is always a way around it. Asked about the chrome cylinders, he said "...previous owners always took care of them and serviced them as needed...". I'll bet there's a good chance the chrome has been mitigated in some way, seems very unlikely that (2) models of the same ownership would BOTH last with chrome for such high mileage.

It was Sonny that responded.
