Wheels that fit a G5?
« on: January 30, 2019, 07:48:05 PM »
Wheels for a 1979 G5 project...

- Would I be correct to assume I could fit either spokes or cast rims?
- Did they ever make a rear drum brake for a cast rim?
- Do the T/T3 spokes fit the later final drives just the same as the earlier deep sump drives?

At first I thought I'd go with cast rims because I assumed lower cost, and somewhat because they can be converted to tubeless, but a few of the cast rims I've come across seem rather pricey. I had assumed they be cheaper than the Borani rims.

I think in a perfect world, I'd go with Borani spoked rims, but I suppose that's a taller order?

Thanks!

Yes, you can fit either with the correct axles and spacers.
No, Guzzi never made a drum brake cast wheel, at least not for big-blocks.
Yes, those wheels will work with either of the rear drives.

Borrani wire wheels show up on E-bay. Harpers Moto Guzzi should have a nice selection for you.

I wonder if I can put a rear spoked drum brake on the G5 final drive?

Yes. You will need to weld a tab on the G5 swingarm for the tie-rod to attach to.

Ok thanks. Are there no issue with cush rubbers on the drum hub? Or do I have that wrong?

A V700/Ambassador/Eldorado/V7 Sport drum brake rear wheel has no cush drive, only the 850-T rear wheel does. Cush drive or no cush drive, drum or disc, spoke or cast, they all work.

I wish I could take credit for it, but I can't. That was done by my friend Curtis Fisk. Too pretty to powdercoat over...
