2006 CalVin blowing charging fuse
« on: February 01, 2019, 10:10:52 AM »
Hi, My bike has blown two of the 30amp charging fuses in a short period of time.  I am wondering if someone could point me in the directions needed to test and correct this issue.  So far I have fully charged and cleaned battery terminals, tested battery for charge (12.7 vol) and cleaned all fuse sockets.  Next I will be checking all the wiring and connections within the charging circuit: including the frame ground.  Should I be worried about the regulator with only 16K miles on the bike; if so how do I check and verify the regulator is working correctly?
Thanks in advance!

Is it only blowing the 30 amp fuse ? I would start at all of the connections to the battery if that is the case .

Take out bolts holding regulator & drop down. Up in steering head area between frame is wires for regulator.
2 Yellow-- Alternator
2 Red/White----- Fuses
2 Green---Battery neg post
Look for chaffing or shorts to frame, melting from heat, etc

Yes, it is only the 30amp charging fuse that has blown out.
Thanks for the providing me with a general direction to look for shorts and other issues.  This will be my project today until the rain starts.
What about ways to check the regulator or alternator for electrical output?

Thanks

The regulator/rectifier might do that.
I would suspect some form of intermittent short too.

A loose/corroded fuseholder itself can cause it. It's not unheard of on V11 Sports.

To get the testing you have to go back farther in manuals to 98EV
