Breva 1100 Swingarm and shock linkage bearings
« on: February 21, 2019, 01:08:18 AM »
Morning All

I'm sorting things out to check/grease the bearings in the swing-arm & shock linkage in my B11

Given that the bike is now 13 odd years old and probably built during the MG grease shortage years, I'm guessing that there is a good chance they will be FUBAR

So I'm looking to find sources for all the bearings and seals (not from MG) and need the  numbers so I can talk to a bearing factor

I've given the internet a coat of looking at but haven't found them yet

Does anyone have this info?

Cheers

I know it's not exactly what you're asking for but Stein-dinse has great exploded views with clickable parts. most bearings have their type code on them so you can look up the dimentions that way (or just order them at SD). Hope it helps!

Tris, the swingarm bearings themselves are very ordinary. The problem with looking for an aftermarket replacement is that the way they seal at the wide end of the cone in the frame is different from any of the aftermarket RS bearings I've been able to find. I've spent a LOT of hours looking in to this and eventually decided that it was easier to just buy the factory ones. They are hardly expensive, $50AU basically which at current exchange rates would be about $35 US. Look after them and they will last a long time, it's the lack of grease and water intrusion that kills them.

With the shock linkages if you buy the bearings, even from the aftermarket, the cost along with seals comes very close to the cost of a new linkage complete. Add in the time and hassle of rebuilding it and the possibility of screwing something up and simply buying a new 'Dog Bone' makes a lot of sense, (Cost circa $200 AU). The torsion link due to the fact it only has two bearings, (It might be just one, I can't remember and haven't checked.) it is probably sensible to source bearings and seals but do check the link for cracks at the base of the 'Y', I've seen two in twelve years that appeared to be cracked so I shit-canned them, it's an important component, you don't take risks.

Thanks for the guidance Pete

I've had a quick look earlier and found these https://simplybearings.co.uk/shop/p43752/KOYO-32005JRRS-Narrow-Section-Steering-Head-Set-Taper-Roller-Bearing-25x47x15mm/product_info.html

I've not checked into manufacturer yet, but they come in at 1/2 the price of the OEM who say they're on back order anyway

The shock linkage (in fact every component on the rear suspension) is also on back order

Time for me is free and the work comes with an education

At the moment I'm just making sure I have the solutions to the problem should it arrive,  but you never know, someone might have been in before me and there is grease in abundance  :thumb:

Sadly those bearings won't work due to the seals sitting proud of the bearing face, the swingarm won't clear them and they won't seal correctly. As I said, I've searched extensively over the last few years and haven't found anything like the original bearings. That isn't to say they aren't available, just that to my mind the effort of spending any more time looking renders it an uneconomic proposition.

The linkage?

The bearings.

Both in stock. I'm assuming that includes all European/UK taxes as they cost me considerably less.

I have a really good second hand linkage on the shelf and new bearings if you're interested?

Pete

I see the difference now Pete

Once I get it torn down and see if I need the link I'll give you the shout

I bought a set of swing arm bearings for my B11 from Gutsi Bits in the UK they werent all that expensive.  Re the shock linkage I found it was just as cheap to buy a whole new linkage with bearing as buying the individual bearing then it was just grease and fit.

Must admit Pete that the box they had when I was looking for one was way more expensive than the one I got out of the States on Fleabay.

Well I'm lucky boy :thumb: :thumb:

Either someone else has been in here before me or the Luigi the Grease Rebel built the bike as all the bearings are well greased and in good condition

Still all prepped for reassembly tomorrow ..... with added grease to be sure to be sure

Thanks to everyone for the guidance and support
