BUB oil pan
« on: February 22, 2019, 03:21:34 PM »
Found a used BUB "outsider" type sump for big blocks.  Who has experience with this item?

Oil pans are hard to find -- Curtis says it's because people try to pry them off without removing the center screws. Is the BUB a rational alternative?

as I recall, there have been issues over the years with the rubber hoses failing.

I guess you could  use braided stainless and upgraded connections to try and alleviate that issue.

The BUB pan and the "Outsider" are totally different in manufacture, Design and theory.  Kind of like finding a Pontiac F-150 at a garage sale??

The internal hoses in the BUB sumps were always the main suspicion for their low oil pressure history.
While there was a couple instances of hose failure that I can remember, the bulk of that low oil pressure thing was actually the length of the mounting bolts used on the hose manifold blocks.
The bolts that came with them were slightly too long and bottomed out before getting the needed squish on the gaskets between the engine block and the oil line mounting blocks..

Ditto.
I would suggest that you dont  install a BUB sump.
I would direct you you to source a stock pan, their out there , fit a Harpers Outsider system.
I have one on my 76 convert no issues at all.

The Harpers Outsider may be my final solution, but it's expensive (Guzzi content) -- five times what I'm paying for a T3 block! Would love to find a stock sump at reasonable cost.

Is this what you need?

No, that's the original sump for the pre-oil-filter T. What I need is the sump that takes an oil filter.

Here's another option, with a Harpers outsider you'll be mint.

 https://www.ebay.ca/itm/Moto-Guzzi-Oil-sump-pan-spin-on-oil-filter-type-std-on-1976-up-w-NEW-filter/264206641167?hash=item3d83f1680f:g:skgAAOSwKptcbdVj:rk:1:pf:0&vxp=mtr

Even w/o the outsider the OP will be golden with this pan. The outsider makes filter changes convenient.

I have a Bub on my SP1000.  No issues with the oil pressure problems.  Put new hoses on before install and you'll be fine.  It's time that I change the ones in my SP.
From the Deep Deep South out in left field.  There are no stupid questions.  There are however stupid people asking questions.  🤣, this includes me.  😉 Hawaii.

No, it isn't. I personally know 2 people whose motors got trashed because of the BUB. One picked up a piece of broken lock washer through the intake 'lollipop' because it had no screen (!) I believe the oil pump was damaged which resulted in no oil pressure.

The other one had a hose blow off while idling on the centerstand and the rear crank journal welded itself to the main bearing. Pretty sure he was able to save the crank after removing it from the motor and polishing it. Not worth it IMHO.

I have 3 used Bub sumps, I have looked hard at them & have an idea for eliminating the internal rubber hoses. It will take some machining, aluminum welding, & loong 10mm bolts. I haven't gone beyond the thinking about it phase. I ran one of the the sumps I have on my SPNT for many miles. The only issue I had was the sealing gasket blowing out of an oil filter, of course, that was a FRAM filter issue (LAST one of that brand I've ever used in anything). Still, if I was to get the Bub modified, I'd have a groove for the filter gasket machined into the flat area the filter tightens against.
