LED flashlights
« on: February 23, 2019, 09:50:20 PM »
Looking for a flashlight for general home use but small enough to throw in the bike luggage. LEDs have come a long ways so currently what might be some good recommendations that don't cost a lot but works well (Guzzi content)?

I got one of those volt pack flashlight combo's.  About the size of 2 pack of cigarettes.  Flashlight, 12v jumper for cars/trucks, usb port to charge phones lap tops, sos flasher & strobe flasher.
From the Deep Deep South out in left field.  There are no stupid questions.  There are however stupid people asking questions.  🤣, this includes me.  😉 Hawaii.

John, how about a headlamp? Hands free, great in case you need both hands working on your bike, walking a dog, or taking in groceries.
Many use aaa rechargeable batteries, multiple lighting modes, and throw a lot of light. Take up very little room in your saddlebag.
This one shows 150 Lumina, others offer more.

From a self admitted flashlight junkie...on the bike I carry a Surefire, small, powerful, fits nicely in the palm of the hand, runs on 2 3 volt Lithium batteries...feels good in hand, and has 2 light settings, and can fit nicely in a jacket or pants pocket if needed, so good for walking thru the campsite at night.

Around the house and cars, a variety of Maglites do the trick...

Mag Lite. XL50 is simple and bright, XL200 looks the same, but has a real interesting users interface (can be dimmed). Both have 3x AAA - cells. Mag Tag (plain bezel) is only slightly bigger, runs with CR123 and is significantly brighter than the XL - types. Or Mag Tag rechargeable. A bit longer than Mag Tag, has a build-in rechargeable battery and illuminates the forest while you are walking the dog quite remarkably. It is more a flooder than a thrower compared to all other Mag Lites. But it sometimes needs a bit pampering (cleaning, lubricating with contact spray) of the internal contacts.
I have them all and like them. But in the last time I normally use one of my old mini - Mag Lites with a cheap 90 lm drop-in and NiZn - accus...

If it may be bigger, XL300LX 2D. All are Made in America. Something that even we Germans prefer to Chinese built stuff like our own brand Led-Lenser.

If you want a dirt cheap light that woks as a flood light for emergency use on the bike or as a tent light, The Harbor Freight light is a good light. Many times a coupon for free with another purchase. This one pictured is slightly different than my older version, probably works as well:
https://www.harborfreight.com/ultra-bright-led-portable-worklightflashlight-64005.html

If you need more of a distance beam, I have been happy with Stramlight for LRD or Maglite brand lights.

Hope this helps,

Dont know if they still have it cause I cant find it on their website, but I bought the 500 lumen version of this light at walmart.  Its USB rechargeable, lithium batteries, lasts a heckuva long time, and really lights up the night.  Plus doesnt take up much space.  It so bright I'm glad I didn't spring for the 750 as I would never need that much light and the 750 has shorter time between charges.  My uncle was so impressed with it during deer season this year that he promptly went out and bought one for himself.

I had a gift certificate from batteries plus and got this one. It’s verry bright on its highest setting (it has 3) has a strobe setting and sos. Can also be used for self defense. I use it all the time for spotlighting deer in surrounding yards.

Go out to EBay

Search "cree LED flashlight"

Find the ones for a dollar that take a single AA battery.  But a dozen.  Free shipping.   Your friends will steal them from you.

Some of my friends were buying a nice flashlight at WalMart for $18.  I got the same thing on EBay for $3.20.  Free shipping.

 :thumb:

Do yourself a favor and get one that uses the cheap AA or AAA batteries.

I really like the Streamlight Protac series of flashlights. My favorite is the 1AA model; 350 lumens from a light powered by a single AA battery. It is very compact and bright and will use either Alkaline or Lithium Batteries (in addition to producing a brighter light, Lithium batteries last longer and have a 10 year shelf life). A 2AA version is also available.

Looking for a flashlight...

we live in the golden age of flashlights.  At most any checkout line, you'll find a small LED light that clips to your jacket zipper that will last longer and put out better light than any of those old heavy D-cell Rayovacs we used to carry.

Just like a conventional flashlight when the batteries get weak, the light gets dimmer.

True fact, there. I thought I'd bought my last flashlight back in the day with this 3 D cell bad boy..

Pfttt. I now have several 1 and 2 AA battery flashlights that put it to shame.

FWIW, I got one of these as a gift. The best way to get a spendy item. Although not cheap, I'm really impressed by how small it is yet puts out 550 lumens. Its also USB charging so no batteries to worry about.

This was my first MagLite. It is - according to MagLite who provided me this information - 34 years old, it still lives and has a Dittmann LED dropin. Sturdy thing - but not exactly small and light.

Somebody said it correctly about the golden age of flashlights!

A few months ago I purchased a Bushnell brand T750L medium-size flashlight from WalMart.  It's a high-quality aluminum body unit and it wasn't cheap by WM standards.  But, wow, what a light output!  This thing lights up the trees a good 500 feet away where you can almost read a mailbox sign.

Bushnell offers an even more powerful flashlight but it is also much longer in size.

My guess is that the batteries (6-AA's) will last much longer than with a standard incandescent light.

O-Light headlamp.

https://www.amazon.com/OLIGHT-headlamp-Flashlight-Powered-Batteries/dp/B075S5V1ZQ/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1551115143&sr=8-5&keywords=olight+headlamp

Got these originally for my son and I for going camping with the boyscouts. They wad up into a small bundle, they're very light weight, but they throw a ton of light and last a long time. And now, they're selling for 1/3 of what I paid for them five years ago. Mine now lives in my saddlebag.

I have to agree on the Olight LED flashlights. I have several (two are 1000 lumen tactical lights) that I've owned and used over the last several years. They are high quality and very durable at a very reasonable price, they last too.
