I am pulling out in the morning to drive 1400 miles round trip to pick up a 1967 Honda CL77 305 Scrambler. Eight thousand on the clock, two documented owners since being purchased new in Ashland Kentucky, clean title. Don't let the description fool you, rough as a cob, but mostly all there. Going to need a lot of lipstick for this little piggy....

Calling for snow, Wife has a horrible cold on top of being to PO'ed about another addition to the herd, back is half out from pulling the trailer out of the back yard mud, garage is already overflowing from my regular riders and a CL350 project, and one of my cats has a tooth that has to come out, but dammit, I have never been happier.......

I sometimes sincerely think it would be much easier to be addicted to crack than motorcycles....

great looking bike. i have owned 2 cl77's over the years and i really wish i had kept one. lots of fond memories of that bike. unique sound. the exhaust noise was generally 'enhanced' by one of 3 methods: removing the internal baffles and cutting off one section - reinsert, installing snaufernots (basically a large washer welded to an adjustment screw which sat on the outermost lip of the exhaust pipes), just removing all baffles entirely.

the prices on these things have gone up absurdly here in california. a nice one is in the $ 3-4K range - yipes. i sold my last one over 20 years ago for $300.

He said the bike is in rough shape if low mileage... so I doubt it's road-worthy, that being one of the defining parts of a fly-n-ride...

Had one of those. The primary chain broke at speed. Balled up in the side cover and locked up the rear wheel.
Exciting I guess you could call it.

yipes! that'll wake you up. the only thing i recall about drive chains with those things was that you could not use an O-ring chain because they are wider than a non-O-ring chain and that extra width will wear a hole in your case.

The bike and I pulled in this afternoon, I am pretty sure a good waxing should take care of most of the imperfections. I am looking forward to starting this one since it is for my own collection. It is rough, but all is there, low mileage, great compression, clean title and the most perfect set of pipes and muffler for a 305 I have ever seen. I am not sure about the tail light since I have never seen one this large on a CL77, but there are no extra fender holes and cut out matches the grab perfectly. The seller also threw in the almost new lift since he not doing motorcycles anymore, he has his fun rebuilding Shoe Box Chevys, over 20 in his collection. This one is going to take awhile and a lot more mad money, parts for 305 Scramblers are somewhat rare and damn expensive, but it will be done right. This was the bike to have when I graduated High School in 1967......

Looks great in red/silver! The taillights and mufflers were “wheelie-bait.” Everyone who had one back in the day had Snuffers and a broken taillight lense.

Lots of interesting discoveries on the CL77 so far, (ie) condenser wires ran to wrong side coils, simple wrong fix cross the plug wires. Some of the wiring involved lamp cord and wire nuts, when the shift rod splines became worn, easy fix, braze the shift pedal to the end of the rod. The previous owners apparently were not real big into preventive maintenance or apparently never possessed an owners manual. I will bet hard cash the oil slinger had not seen human touch since 1967. Honda contributed too, lets change from JIS thread pitch on main jets in the the middle of the three year run, best of luck on the correct carb rebuild kits. There are different seat attaching points, tail light brackets, and exhaust systems, all in the three year run this bike was produced.

All that being said, the damn thing went around the block today, and it runs good even with eyeball synced carbs and no air filters. After a complete rewire, setting the points, valve lash, and timing, installing rebuilt carbs with right jets finally, it fired on the fourth kick. No blue oil smoke and it will start every time with one or two kicks. The charging system even works as much as can be expected. My initial goal has been achieved, check the condition of the engine before starting to make it pretty. A number of parts have been collected, correct tail light, actual OEM horn that fits in the headlight bucket, complete uncut front fender and stay, skid plate, and other bits here and there. Parts are rare and damn expensive but I check Flea Bay daily. The next step will be complete tear down, for cleaning and paint. It is always a good feeling when you hear one come back to life......

I have three of those CL77's, two with titles. And enough spare parts to almost build a fourth. They can be a bit addicting. The red frame version is what I decided I wanted for my first vintage bike. It started a fun but addictive habit.

I sold my V7 Sport last week, money burning a hole In the pocket …..this week I saw a Ducati 860 GT advertised for sale in eastern Canada, I knew not to call but I did anyway and after a couple days of back and forth I am going to be the next owner of a complete, running and not too shabby looking (but need of a restoration) 1st year 860 - single disc kick-start bevel.

For years I have had a personal "No Ducati Rule' … but rules are meant to be broken

I really really hate upholstery, so it was with great pleasure that I checked covering that ugly arse overstuffed seat off of the "To Do" list this afternoon. There was quite a bit of rust under the padding, and I had to make new cover catch prongs out of an old motorcycle license plate, but the dirty deed is done. Now on to paint, that is a hell of a lot more fun........

I see you have the dreaded oxidation creeping underneath the paint on the engine.

On one of the little C100's we had I carefully got a basin of water and wet sanded all the paint off, then polished it. Made it easier to keep clean, a spray with an alkaline truck underbody, cleaner, hose off and it was back to brand new again.
