Hey all,
Been a dedicated Guzzi rider/owner for over 30 years but have been giving serious consideration of selling several if not all of my Guzzi's and buying a Honda Gold Wing Tour Automatic . Anyone have any experience with the new Goldwing's?

I think you'll enjoy it, funny you mention the GW, I ride with some older guys and we joke that my new MG has been back to the shop 3 times in 3-4 month, he has 198,000 miles on his GW and its been in the shop only twice...
Ride and enjoy!
-
While I don’t own one, I’ve demoed several of the new Wings. Impressively smooth and nimble. While I am not a fan of the DCT version some seem to love it. Lots of mid range torque makes riding a big bike like the Gold Wing pretty easy. The only down side is Honda is proud of them and prices them accordingly.
-
I'd try it on it's side 1st, 838lbs My EV is my limit.
-
1986 Moto Guzzi Lemans IV = bought off showroom floor in Nashville from Sonny Colliier
I have many spares including like new original seat, exhaust, Euro signals ect.
1996 Cali i 1100 = almost approaching 80,000 miles. Swanee fairing and I also have a tinted MG screen as well. Hepco Becker trunk/bags, Corbin saddle ect.
1998 Moto Guzzi EV = I would hate to part with this work horse. Corbin saddle, Hepco Becker trunk/bags, Denali led driving lights, MG short sport shield as well as a PlexStar.
2007 Moto Guzzi Breva 1100 = Cat removed, new 1200 Breva Sport forks, upgrade headlght, Denali led driving lights, cylinder crash bars, CARC crash bar, Corbin Saddle, Russell Daylong saddle as well as the original saddle. Mistral muffler as well as stock. K&N airfiler, MG saddle bags as well as a Givi trunk. MG screen as well as a larege PARABELLUM shield.
This is only a sparse list as i have many more spare parts for all of the bikes listed above.
All bikes fully tagged, ridden and insured year round.

Yes, GW's seem to go forever with little trouble. I'm also looking at downsizing since I'm about to approach 60 years of age. Down to 1 car (91' 240 Volo owned since new) and a 2021 Tacoma Sport that I bought new back in June. So thinking the GW will be a good all around bike with heated grips, heated seat, ABS and much more.
I did think about a new V85TT but do I really need 5 Guzzi's?
-
You want to keep at least one Guzzi. Yes Goldwings are largely trouble free. My 2004 had to go in for the frame reweld, but no problem since. But they are heavy. You won’t be able to go places you can on your EV especially off pavement. We like to point the bike in a direction and just go regardless of what the pavement turns into. A few times I had to turn around when encountering steep, rough gravel roads that would have been no problem on the EV.
Because they are reliable you could start out with a used one if you wanted. 100k miles they are just getting broken in.
Pete
-
“….but do I really need 5 Guzzi's?“
I have five, maybe one less would be OK.
-
I'd keep your favorite Guzzi's for a while after you buy the GW..... You may regret it. The GW is a very nice bike, but lack that 'something' essential to the MC experience.
-
I did the exact opposite. I had a 2018 Goldwing non tour model. Fantastic bike. You get all the bells and whistles with a Wing. It's a heavy touring machine. Like all Hondas, change the oil and put the key in and ride. But if you want something unique in a bike don't buy a Goldwing. It's the reason I bought my 2020 California.
-
To me the fact that you are looking at the new GW says you are still at a time and place in your/mate place where you like the idea of long distance tour type of riding.
Therefore looking beyond MG is a reasonable and probably smart move, due to MG offers no such creature at this time.
Good luck with whatever you decide and my only advice would be that when and if you make that decision don’t look back.
The only thing I can offer on the GW is my buddy just bought one and loves it. He says it’s the only heavy motorcycle he’s ever owned that he can’t feel the pain of the weight.
-
There are a lot of reasons to go with a new Goldwing, and while I would not try this (video below), its the rider, not the bike that says where you go.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMrxee_fazo
I'd suggest you hang around a Goldwing forum to help you decide....
-
Goldwings are usually very reliable but if ever you do have a problem look out.
Besides that they are as boring as bat----
Just my opinion FWIW
-
I had a wing and loved it during its brief tenure. Sara got on the back and realized that she wasn’t snuggling me, so didn’t like it. Sayonara. I say go for it and keep your favorite Guzzi.

I went on a ride with a long time Guzzi friend on his newly acquired GW which he bought so he could go on long trips with his wife. I was on the Daytona and we swapped bikes on the ride, I can see why some people like them but it just wasn’t for me and in the end it wasn’t for my friend either as he sold it a few months later. I did like the version that came out a few years ago that nobody seemed to like; it just looked smaller and more fun to me but they didn’t sell.
And as Roy, JMO.

Nothing wrong with owning a vintage Honda!! I miss the ol' "Root Beer Float"...aka, my 1978 GL1000 - "naked" Gold Wing! It as a blast to ride...low and fast...and would run a 12-second quarter mile... :thumb:

How to tell that I've been replaced by an alien imposter: I post here "selling Guzzis going to Honda".

I have a 2010 gold wing 1800 and love it! BUT, replacing the air filter is a three hour job. I have to do it tomorrow (26 feb) again and am not looking forward to it.

30-plus years ago I was talking with a couple sitting on a Goldwing. I noticed they both had Harley T-shirts on. I asked them if they owned a Harley as well as the Wing. I still remember their reply, “Sold it! We wanted a motorcycle that would bring us back!” I always thought that was pretty funny, even if I was a diehard Harley rider at the time.
-
I haven't ridden the latest iteration, but chose the Vulcan Voyager 1700 in 2010 after a good test ride on the wing. Back to back there was no comparison in handling and rider comfort.
Unless you have a great deal in the works, I recommend test riding the Indian Challenger, Harley Davidson Road Glide, BMW RT, and the Golwing back to back before making a decision.
If the automatic is the main driver, then other bikes like the Tracer 9, an maybe Versys 1000 have quick shifters so you don't have to clutch.
-
My Buddy is on his sixth Wing, started with a 1976 Gl1000, then a 1100, another 1000, 1200, 1500, 1800 circa 2016. If you want the same travel comfort with a little more room for the passenger test ride a BMW K1600 GTL, I did and bought it over the wing, near identical price and specs. My wife finds the BMW has more room for her even though she is pretty small, more comfortable backrest etc.

Agree. I rode that big Kaw- sorta an imitation 'Glide. I thought the Harley handled and rode much better. I can only guess how much better a new Gold Wing might be. I sat on a new one and liked the riding position. Not a cruiser, felt light. I'd like to test one. Sorry the saddlebags won't hold a FF helmet. Certainly the new 'Wing didn't feel as ponderous as my brother's 1600 Beemer.
I'd like to get one but not sure I want to write that check.
-

My '08 is my 5th Wing, all were purchased new but don't think I can afford another new one in retirement (lol). I prefer it to anything else in my stable (CB125s, CL350, Wee Strom, '72 Eldo, LMIVSE & V11 Lemans) for comfort, reliability & long distance 2 wheel travel.

Seeing as you'd be fortunate to get any real $$$ out of selling the Guzzis I'd keep at least two of them. Bought, paid for, cheap to insure, easy to maintain-that sort of thing. What's the worst that will happen? You sell the rest of them next year?
-
The only Wings I have ridden were early ones, I wasn't impressed. I am sure newer ones are much better. Unless you are set on an auto trans I would go with a 1400 Cali or a Road Glide. You might still be able to find a new Cali somewhere. Then again a nice Convert might work.
kk
-
I spent time at a Honda 'ship as a service writer. This is my direct observation and in no way do I say ALL wingers are some of the most condescending, pretentious folks this side of the grass. We just seemed to have a large proportion of them. Service work came to a halt to cater to them. Certainly not the type of rider coming off a Guzzi. If you want one, get it. Life is short.

a couple of points.
The GW has a standard riding position unlike the cruiser set up like the 1400, Harley & Indian. The GW doesn't have floor boards but instead wide pegs. The new GW is quite a bit lighter and has a easy turning telelver style fork. I recently took a trip to Arkansas on my Ducati and one riders came along on the DCT Honda GW. He really liked the bike in the hills. Obviously he didn't keep up with the sportbikes but he liked the DCT because there was less of a chance to stall the engine. BTW, he was riding with a guy on a Ninja that did kill his bike in the twisties and who dropped it.
-
I just put Goldwing pegs on my Norge. That was enough for me.
-
FWIW, I seriously thought about a new wing too when I was in the market to get rid of the lemon MGX. Great bikes, dealers everywhere, handled great, tons of power and the tech is pretty good too.
But the Indian won my Pro/Con list by about 3 points. You can't go wrong. Good luck.
p.s. Keep the EV :thumb: Hands down the best motorcycle Guzzi has ever built (IMHO). I still have two of 'em and have zero plans on ever letting them go.

I will never buy another Wing but it was all my fault. I traded a 40 mile Harley XR1200 that I had sitting in the garage on a Wing on a whim. Immediately regretted it and tried to get it back the next day, to no avail. What a doofus.
-
You traded an XR1200 on a Wing? I won't call you a doofus but............. I love Sportys but that one is the holy grail. I wish I had kept my 2006, prices on Sportys in my neck of the woods have skyrocketed.

I know. I did a job for a Harley dealer. He said if I won the suit he’d give me the bike. I did and they dropped it off. It was black but I bought a set of oem orange bodywork and a shop manual too. It sat for about three years and I hadn’t ridden it yet. I think I only got about 7 on the trade.

When I found my 2010 Cafe Classic the same dealer had an XR1200 for sale. It felt so top heavy pulling up off the side stand that I didn't even ask for a test ride. Now I am wishing I had at least ridden it. Turns out the Cafe Classic was prettier than it was enjoyable to ride.

The newest version of the Gold Wing has almost nothing in common with previous versions beyond the engine and the name. It's amazing how compact it is compared to the earlier version. Die hard two-up "Wingers" found that to be its biggest fault. I would disagree. Only a test ride will determine if it's the right bike for you.
-

I've just returned to owning a goose after literally a 20yrs hiatus. Like others I own a 'few' bikes. Kept 2 big Yammie cruisers (XVZ1300T & XV1600) Actually kinda 'downgraded' as the other big Yammie I've parted with was an XVZ1300 Royal Star Venture. Simply too damned heavy (400kg) cumbersome in any traffic conditions, although I'd argue with anyone, THE most comfortable tourer made. I've got 'options' obviously, but the EV Cali is simply a blast to ride, and I have no trouble riding a distance on it (400 mile day ride to date). I'm fortunate to live in the best motorcycling country in the world (even Henry Cole {world's greatest motorcycle rides} gave us TWO episodes lol). The Cali is just 'built' for our roads.
-
I'd recommend keeping the EV for these reasons. The EV is good for exploring down old roads to ghost towns etc. You can't beat the side stands of the EV's. I said you could park them on everything but quick sand.
Good luck in your choice,
Tex

Never rode the latest model but when we found out the luggage was even smaller than the first generation 1800 we no longer considered it. Before the Wing I had a BMW airhead RT. The stock bags and Luftmeister tailbox held half again as much as the Goldwing. I got a Pakit Rak to compensate. The new Wings may work for a solo rider, not so much for a couple traveling cross country.

Of course with that drivetrain you can pull a camper behind you. LOL!

In making the newest Goldwing trimmer and slimmer, Honda was attempting to appeal to a younger rider and get away from the "Geezer Glide" image the bike has. Don't think it worked. After all, even the "stripped down" version without the top case is over $25K. Add in fees and taxes, and you're closing in on the $30K mark. Don't know how many 30 and 40 year olds are going to spring for that. I'm not alone in thinking Honda would have been better off redesigning their venerable ST1300.
-
I had a 2000 Wing first year of the 1800, and test rode the newest variant two years ago. IMO the new one is *much* nicer, it rides smoother, handles better, and is much more comfortable for the rider (not sure about passenger). I do find them almost appliance like and would want at least one other bike as well.

Agree about the small saddlebags, otherwise it's pretty sleek bike for what it is. The cost is pretty high but used ones are really high too. They're high demand short supply right now.
The 1300 was a bust because of heat build up, they later made a cruiser-tourer version of the bike. After looking at the Beemers & cruisers, the 'Wing would be my first choice. Although I'd probably be better off with an FJR since my two-up days are over.

The NT 1100 looks to be a plausible sport tourer https://youtu.be/4TBCGXodpqQ from Honda.
I would cross shop it with the Yamaha Tracer 9, and the Kawasaki Versys 1000 LT+.

I've owned 27 Guzzi's over the past 30 years. Sold the last one a couple years back and last year I downsized to a 2021 RE 650 GT. Still loving it. A very easy to enjoy bike on many levels. Have it fully broken in now and doing a oil change and valve check on it before I start taking it longer distances. Its been mechanically flawless for me and ran better out of the box than any other bikes I have ever owned. I mean that to say the Fuel injection is amazingly well done. It just plain runs great from cold idle to a warmed up redline.
My legs ain't what they used to be. They are almost half artificial hardware now. So I don't ride like I did in my 30s and 40s. But right now this mid sized old school cafe bike suits me to a T!

FK can stick around.....nothing in Luap's rules state that you have to own a Guzzi to be here!

fan base it's his call!!!

At this time I'm uncertain what I'm going to do. I wanted to setup a test ride on both the new 2022 Goldwing and a new Guzzi V85TT of which they have in stock. I was told since they have limited inventory that demo rides are out. Well I'm not about to shell out
$25,000 on a new GW if I'm only allowed to sit on it in the showroom.

You are obviously talking about Sloans. That makes me curious because they are still sending me emails inviting me to one on one demo rides. Did you tell them that you are a high potential buyer? I know if I had a V85TT I would let you ride it. Maybe Ronnie would be interested in swapping bikes with one of yours for a ride so you can experience the V85TT and he can experience a big block Guzzi.
-
What about Southern Honda Powersports in Chattanooga?
-
Yes, Sloan's but my only contact at this time has been through emails so when the weather breaks, I'll take a ride over in person and talk.
Selling off all of my Guzzi's would be a big step after 30+ years of loyalty so if a V85TT would fit the bill I would just have to make more room in the garage.
Time will tell..
-
What about Southern Honda Powersports in Chattanooga?
Checked their online inventory and they have none. Also I would like a dealer that is closer to home.
-
This is the closest Honda dealer for me and they are always competitive with their pricing and they are a great bunch of people. I understand Iowa is a haul for most but at least it is central. To add my 2c, the latest generation of Wing is a much better motorcycle than any previous versions.

I have been riding motorcycles since 1972 ( 50 years) of those years I have owned different Gold wings for 35 years. I have owned an 82 Aspencade, 84 Interstate,95 1500, 2000 1500 trike, and my current 08 1800 Trike. Wings have been my only 2 up bikes over all those years because my wife loves them , as much as I do. We used to be GWRRA members and all that. I only currently feel safe 2 up on a trike, because of leg/ankle issues,Gold wings make fantastic trike conversion platforms , and are even incredibly capable on gravel roads. Wings are simply engineering masterpieces, and have only gotten better over the years. The lines of that bike just flow beautifully from front to back. I also dig the sportier version without the trunk... F6B?
The bike you are considering is a knockout! What a beautiful machine. Honda really did some great things with the newest wing. I personally would not buy the dct version, unless it was a trike conversion. From what I have read, the DCT makes it a bit tricky for low speed maneuvers, since you cant feather the clutch for control, and may make it "tippy" in low speed stuff.
I would still love to ride one. Like others have recomended, keep one or two of your favorite Guzzis, we all need a "guzzi fix" from time to time, and there really is no substitute.
Good luck,
Rick D.

I have a 2021 tour dct. I’ve had just about every Harley, Indian, and BMW touring bike. The Wing is my favorite by far. I love the dct more and more every time I ride it. I’m considering a Guzzi as a second bike, maybe the V85tt. I’ve had a Norge, California tour, and V7 III. But there’s no way I’m giving up my Wing. It’s surprisingly agile, unbelievably fast (in sport mode), rock solid on the highway, and all day comfortable. It’s the one big touring bike that I’ve had that is good at everything.

Congrats on the bike, IMO way better than the Goldwing. Best of luck.
-
Enjoy! Looks like a nice touring rig.

Yeah, fair enough.
You just had the “I wants...”
We’ll keep your seat warm for when you return.

Clickbait: I feel a little emotionally drained and kinda used. I signed on from the premise of selling one or all 4 Guzzi's and buying a Goldwing. Then at one point considering not selling any but adding another Guzzi. Then, in the end, selling no Guzzi's and buying no Goldwing. Seriously?
-
Congrats on the new scoot.

Cool!

Nice bike! I ended up buying a 2011 R1200RT for long trips. Pretty happy with it so far. Been interesting interacting with various BMW dealerships. Mostly positive experiences. And mostly expensive ones as well.
For example, one dealer said the labor would be $250 for them to put on new tires for me (that is me riding the bike in, not bringing in wheels off the bike). Another dealer it was $80. Another dealer was $95. The $95 was closest to me so I went there. And for $23 more they drained and refilled the diff oil. Very reasonable.
And the nice $950 BMW jackets, gotta get one of those!

Yes, I test rode a new Goldwing and an Indian. This BMW was a better fit for me

Put a couple hundred miles on it since yesterday and is very comfortable and the added bodywork/heated seat and grips is perfect for those cold mornings

I've been emotionally drained as well and hope you'll be ok as well

Enjoy your new ride. It should serve you well. :boozing:

While I don’t own one, I’ve demoed several of the new Wings. Impressively smooth and nimble. While I am not a fan of the DCT version some seem to love it. Lots of mid range torque makes riding a big bike like the Gold Wing pretty easy. The only down side is Honda is proud of them and prices them accordingly. Candy Crush (https://candy-crush.io)
It's great to hear that you've had the opportunity to demo several of the new Wings (referring to the Honda Gold Wing motorcycles). The smoothness and nimbleness you experienced are notable qualities of these bikes.

After owning most every brand of Hi $$ touring bike, 14 HD's 3 GW's 2 Norge and 3 BMW's I think should I want something new it would be a new R1250 RT also with all the gee whiz electronic gadgets that they are known for. But truth be told my touring days over long over as I celebrate my 50th anniversary of graduating US Marine Corps boot camp fellowship into the tribe. My Norge is close to my heart and probably my last MC. But, I never say never!

Since 1979 I have kept a Gold wing in my stable as my 2 up bike. Wife got spoiled, and doesnt want to ride pillion on anything else. I have had 6 over the years, started with a naked wing like JJ's, and currently have a 2008 GL 1800 with a Champion trike conversion. At my stage in the game, its the perfect tourer for 2 up, and even though my wife does not ride her own 2 wheeler any longer, she can ride the wing trike, and has ridden with me on the back a few times. My last 2 Goldwings have been trikes.
I have never ridden one of the new wings with DCT, but have read that folks either love them or dont like them at all.

"....folks either love them or don't like them at all."
Everybody finds a bike that fits their needs, I rode a GW once and knew it just wasn't for me.

I had a GW Aspencade for a short time. It truly is the Cadillac of tourers but was just too big and heavy for me to muscle around the garage and parking lots. I was afraid of dropping it and not being able to get it back up and so sold it. Years later, now, I wish I’d kept it.

Nice bike FK.
A bit of a prediction here…
After one year it’ll have 1,200 miles added and be up for sale. The reason(s) will be as follows.
“Too big and heavy to push around the garage”
“Did not find it inspiring”
“Power delivery bland and disinteresting”
“Too hard to do your own servicing”
You’ll sell it and buy a low mile V100, but for now it’s a good choice… :clock: :clock: :clock:

I know the OP has made his decision but thought I'd weigh in with some comments: Good friend who has owned 20+ bikes of all types over the last couple of decades bought one of the new Gold Wings about 1.5 years back. Beautiful bike, gorgeous paint, think it had every option you could get.
Some observations from him and me.
1. Side cases were on the small side.
2. Top case was non removable. This really bothered him as he likes to throw on a large waterproof duffle for the convenience of carrying everything into the motel/hotel.
3. The electric reverse is very nice to have and saved his bacon once or twice.
4. He really liked the adjustable windshield and for his height he was very comfortable behind it and remarked it was relatively quiet regardless of speed.
5. He didn't like the stock pegs and upgraded to the larger OEM versions.
6. While I didn't ride the bike even though he offered I sat on it. As already mentioned, it has a very neutral seating position more akin to a comfortable/relaxed sport tourer then a traditional American cruiser seating profile.
The GW owner, a mutual friend on a CB1100 and I on a 2005 Road King completed a multi-day loop ride last year through the Big Horn Mts to Buffalo, then Sheridan, Cody and on through Yellowstone to Jackson. Leaving Jackson via the Snake River to Alpine Wy and then secondary two-lane roads through sparsely populated counties onward to our homes.
1. Like Kate Upton it carries its weight well. The Wing ran those roads flawlessly without a hint of drama.
2. Always in front with my one bud on the CB and I on the King continuously struggling to catch up.
3. That Gold Wing CRUSHED the ascend into the Big Horns and ran like it was on the old Tyco magna traction slot car tracks on the twisty stuff.
4. There was a stretch between Boulder and Sheridan where he opened the throttle and like the opening scene from the old Star Trek series when the Enterprise went to warp the GW just disappeared into the distance at an astounding rate considering its size and
marketing niche.
When he replaced the rear tire before the trip I remember him having sticker shock. Can't remember the exact price for tire and being mounted but I remember it being pretty steep. His dealership experiences were all good according to him. I took the CB1100 to the same dealer and always had the exact opposite experiences. Might be something to that GW brand cashe.

The nerve to post on a Guzzi forum a thread like “getting rid of my Guzzis, give me your opinions on this way more popular bike.”
Kids these days. No manners

I remember back in the 80's when the Gold Wing Road Riders Association was big, the couples would dress up in matching outfits, with "parachute" pants like MC Hammer, and little vests showing all the "wing Dings" they had attended. It was quite the social thing. The one with the most chrome farkles on their wing, was considered the "Wing King".
How touring riding has changed!

Your friend should have bought the one without the trunk.

Back in the early 90's I tried one of the ST's and 1100 I think. I had it 3 weeks. I was coming off 70k miles on a C10 Concours and many years on my xs11. I wanted to like the opposed twin, but I missed the IL4 motor and went with an FZ1 with FJR bags. Wrecked that on the Cherahola Skyway, and settled on an FJR that I had till 2015 when Dave Richardson got me addicted to Guzzis.
The GRiSO is a powerful entry drug.
I've often wondered how I would find the BMW these days after years on the Guzzi twin. I did cross shop the 9rt (or whatever it is called) when I bought the GRiSO so I guess that answers that.
