OK, here's one where not only are there no wrong answers, but where everyone can learn something new!
When I was thinking about the posts in the other recent music threads, I kept thinking about bands or performers that should have done better - I knew them, I loved them, but if I mentioned them the answer would be a universal "WHO?!?"
So I invite you to chime in with your favorite bands that few if any of us will know, but that might inspire us to check out something we haven't heard or haven't heard lately. I'd suggest that where you can, you say a bit about the style or background of your selection, if they have any tie to something or someone we might know, etc.
Here's a few of mine to start:
- Audience - British, sort of Prog Rock, late 60s and early 70s
- Renaissance - British, orchestral rock, very literate in their lyrics, one of the best three female vocalists of all time (4 1/2 octaves range!!!)
- CANO - Canadian, le Cooperatif des Artistes de Nord-Ontario, a hippie outgrowth folk-rock band that influenced many other Canadian bands for decades to come
- Ian Thomas - Canadian, brother to comedian Dave Thomas (yes, we're still invading!), mainstream rock/pop-rock, covered by major bands such as Santana and Manfred Mann's Earth Band
- Leo Kottke - American, folkie/blues influenced, a voice "like geese farts on a muggy day"; his style is a schizoid blend of Leon Russell Okie and the woods of Minnesota
I have more, but that's enough to get started!

Jimmy Thackery & the Drivers
The Tommy Castro Band

The Cate Brothers from Arkansas . Long career , several albums , absolutely one of the greatest live bands ever , almost unknown outside of our area . In about 1984 the Stones wanted the Cate Bros to tour Europe with them . The Cates said "no , we're on vacation"
About Leo Kotke , he grew up here in Muskogee , so yeah , he sounds like an Okie

I can't see or hear Leo Kottke's name without being reminded of the Garrison Keillor groaner pun when he introduced him on his program:
"He's from a famous American musical family, his ancestor is Francis Kottke" (you have to say it out loud it to understand it).

The best bar band in the land. Used to go every time they were at the Vogue in Indy, saw them in NC, and bikeweek at Daytona beach. High energy, always good, never made it big. Last saw them again in Indy at the Slippery Noodle about 4-5 years ago.

Stomu Yamashta had the likes of Steve Winwood, Al Di Meola, Klaus Schulze Michael Shrieve.

Went to the Slippery Noodle for the first time to see The Stella Vees last October. Cool place to see live music. Came down from Chicago just to see them and check out the venue. Stella Vees is a Chicago style blues band out of I believe Lexington Ky. Seen them at Hot Augest Blues fest on Ky. Lake a few years ago. 😎🎼

As well as "Journey to the Centre of The Eye" and "A Tab in the Ocean".

Sad to say founding member and guitarist Roye Albrighton passed away last July.

Anyone who enjoys YES, King Crimson and early Genesis is sure to find this band of interest. The Dream Syndicate was a great early 80s band that never quite made it. They were part of an LA scene now classified as the Paisley underground. I think only the Bangles and Mazzy Starr had any commercial success.
A band I liked in the 1990s was Paw. Edgy music with a personal touch that grunge didn't have.
When the Counting Crows 1st record came out I had high hopes for them but they never had much else good
The BoDeans were a pretty good 1990s band
-
BoDeans!!! YASS!!!
Two best bands of all time, easy: Golden Earring and Drivin' N' Cryin'

When the Counting Crows 1st record came out I had high hopes for them but they never had much else good
I liked both the first (August and Everything After) and the second (Recovering the Satellites), which contained four very strong pieces -I'm Not Sleeping, Have You Seen Me Lately?, A Long December, and Angels of the Silences.
From this last:
I dream of Michelangelo while I'm lyin' in my bed
Little angels hang above my head, and read me like an open book
Suck my blood, break my nerve, offer me their arms
Well, I would not be an enemy of anything - I'll only stand here
Waiting for you

Long before any of the mainstream bands (Zep, Genesis, Paul Simon, Peter Gabriel) introduced African influences in their music, there was Osibisa.
They had Roger Dean artwork even before Yes had discovered him (this is the back and front from their first album in 1971). Though Dean had done previous covers, the Osibisa piece was the first of his distinctive style of surrealism.
As for other African music that wasn't given the respect it deserved. there is Ladysmith Black Mombasa (widely known thanks to Paul Simon), Miriam Makeba (famous in her own right), the Dave Matthews Band, and to return to the lesser known artists that this thread was started to talk about - Johnny Clegg and Savuka.

I was a big fan of both Zebra (New Orleans) and Honeymoon Suite (Niagara Falls) in the early/mid 80's. A couple'a good rock bands that seemed to have been all but fogged out by all the Aqua Net being sprayed around the 80's rock scene.
Zebra - Tell me what you want.

Great band.
"The band was almost invited to play at Woodstock. When Michael Lang was negotiating with Bill Graham to get the Grateful Dead to appear, Graham insisted Lang put one of two acts that he managed on the bill. Lang then listened to a tape of both It's a Beautiful Day and the other band and liked them so much that he couldn't decide so he flipped a coin and It's a Beautiful Day lost. The band that won was Santana, who became stars overnight."

I'm impressed that someone else remembers Audience.
As for National Health, I still believe that they were a half-baked Hatfield and the North.
-
The Cats. Dutch band from mid 60's through to 80's. Piet Veerman had the most amazing voice.
The Small Faces. I see Humble Pie has been mentioned. Steve Marriot was some singer as well as being a pretty mean guitarist. Sadly, only the drummer Kenny Jones is left. We wore out 3 LP's of Ogdens Nut Gone Flake when I was flatting. Give me a few :boozing: I may still be able to recite the story of Happiness Stan. :thumb:

A couple great bands from the 80's come to mind.
1. The Del Fuegos: A bluesy rock band from the Boston area. Great sound. "Don't Run Wild" great song.
2. The Unforgiven: kind of a guitars up front and in your face rock band. The members were all dressed like they came straight out of an old Western movie. Back in high school, we thought these guys were the greatest. They played at Farm Aid back in the mid 80's, and kind of dwindled out from there. I have their old CD "The Unforgiven" in my truck right now.

Leo Kotke - maybe the best finger style guitarist I ever heard.
XTC - british band very popular in the UK, had a couple chart listers in the US but no great popularity. THE most interesting band since the Beatles... XTC influenced early punk, new wave/alternative, alt-rock, etc.
-
now here's a thread that can derail me all day...
Kotke...in my mind he's like Hendrix for fingerstylists...he opened up the genre, but there are many many unbelievable fingerstylists out there now. Willy Porter from Milwaukee is one, and very accessible. Don Ross - anyone on Candy Rat records out of Canada
Zebra - holy crap. "who's behind the door" I remember trying to get that to catch on. I don't think it's aged well, honestly.
Marriot...a good singer? THE singer IMHO. No Marriot. no Led Zeppelin. Discuss.
There are so many household names on this thread, which in my mind defies the notion of not being big. I mean, if you wanted to say that relative to the Giants, someone should have gotten more respect, no one could go above Lowell George on that list.
There's a cat out of Nashville, Pat McGlaughlin. GREAT songwriter. Does a roadhouse act with an All Star band that go against the very best live music I've ever seen.
I thought Sonia Dada was a great band, never went National, although they OWNED Chicago for a while. Poi Dog Pondering from the Pomegranate era...fantastic.
Steve Riley and the Mamou Playboys - Cajun- a band and a genre that don't get what they deserve.
Storyville - Double Trouble and Dave Grissom teamed up after SRV passed. Great outfit. I guess egos clashed.
Rose Hill Drive - hard rock band from Boulder.
Shoulda been bigger - David Bromberg
dang, I got work to do.
-
Ethyl and the Shameless Hussies from K.C.
"I thought he was Mr. Right...but he left!"
-
mentioned earlier. Only done in by record company management and contracts (and the grim reaper). At least Jimi was able to keep Billy Cox. Keeping Buddy for the funk and harmony would've been fantastic.
I only wish the Hendrix standards were on the album. I think there are euro versions of the record that do.

Love XTC to this very day. They were probably their own worst enemies. I understand agorophobia and having produced "Skylarking" with Todd Rundgren convinced Andy Partridge to never want to record or tour again. "Upsy Daisy Assortment" is such a great collection. I always thought there was was something special happening in the rhythm section, then learned they recorded drums with both Prairie Prince and Pat Mastelotto.
I'll chime in with my other "desert island band" - The Tragically Hip. They owned Canada. Final concert broadcast live in country and it pre-empted EVERYTHING. Talk about national heros. Sad about the singers terminal cancer. Great great great band and a huge library of equally good songs. . . . never really broke huge in the states. One of the few bands I'd really like to see.

This is a great version of Crimson. I saw them in Chicago in '14 and even my wife enjoyed the concert.
I also had to miss GREAT tickets to Roger Waters in Sacramento last Monday. Got them sold though.

I don't understand the title of this thread. It's a misnomer. 'Bands that shoulda done better?' Genesis has been mentioned. They did alright. I believe they even carried on after Gabriel left. Weather Report. Huge. It's almost like asking 'who here likes a Moto Guzzi?'. Nobody I personally know outside of the internet has even heard of my favourite bands. Well, if you look at my original posts when I started the thread, they didn't include the well-known bands you mention - I take no responsibility for how others chose to interpret the title!
As an example of what I intended, I might mention Canada's Ian Thomas - a superb performer, but who is known outside the country more as the writer of hit covers by mainstream acts like Santana, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, America, and Chicago. One of the best end-to-end albums of the 80s is Thomas' The Runner.

Richard Thompson, Leo Kottke, and Renaissance are all really superb.
John Prine is the fellow I think of who never met with the success he deserved. He's one of those guys who many folks aren't hip to, but has written stuff that everybody knows: "Angel From Montgomery" (which he wrote for Bonnie Raitt), "Hello in There," "Sam Stone," just to name a few. Truly a great country/folk artist.

I was a big fan of "Go"
Stomu Yamashta had the likes of Steve Winwood, Al Di Meola, Klaus Schulze Michael Shrieve.
so much Talent .
not to be confused with the current punk band called "go"
I still play GO occasionally, when I am alone and can crank it up. I grew up in Warren Ohio and used to go see Joe Walsh play pre James Gang in a band called The Measels. Became a James Gang Fan.
I second King Crimson: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lrsW--Sh7YE

I've got no additions, just some footprints in the stream -
Over the course of the years I saw these bands from this thread:
Renaissance
Gentle Giant
King Crimson
Fairport Convention
And Stanley Clarke when he was with Return to Forever
And I have tickets to see King Crimson next week in Los Angeles.

Three pages and nobody's mentioned the Welsh band Man?!? The best San Francisco psychedelic rock & roll band to ever come out of Wales. So good that John Cipollina joined them for a while. Think Allman Bros + Quicksilver Messenger Service, even without Cipollina. QMS was another that should have been better-known but internal problems did them in.
This is off the album with Cipollina, Maximum Darkness: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqMT9sb5GAw (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqMT9sb5GAw)

Ten Wheel Drive with singer Genya Ravan. 1968-74 jazz/rock/blues horn band.

Thanks to this thread, I found out that King Crimson will be in town next week. Just got tickets in section "A" center row B at the Greek! :thumb:
-
Well, my own garage band should have done a lot better:
http://dansher.com/banddays.htm (http://dansher.com/banddays.htm)
Please forgive me for blowing my own horn, but those were halcyon days for sure.

That's me on the Jazzmaster (lower right) back in '64. My son has it now along with the Fender Concert Amp which still sings on stage in his band. The Beat goes on.
Hope more than a few of you had the same unforgettable experience...

King Crimson or the Crimson Project? Fripps the difference.

King Crimson or the Crimson Project? Fripps the difference.
The real deal.

Man! Yes, I have some of their albums (yes, vinyl) on my shelf including a test pressing of one of their EP's.
Another under rated Welsh band was Help Yourself.
I have to admit that I haven't listened to either in a while.
I really need an easier way to "rip" vinyl than by using Audacity.

Caravan. From Canterbury.
Video: Golf Girl: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hsp-C6mQGo (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2hsp-C6mQGo)

I still do love Caravan, especially "In the Land of Grey and Pink". It's a guilty pleasure.
My all time favorite bands from the 60's and 70's (one in each decade) were the Small Faces (Steve Marriott era) and Hatfield and the North (which included Richard Sinclair from Caravan). I can't explain either of them, but I've been listening to the Small faces since 1968 and Hatfield since 1974. It's a shame that both bands have a limited catalog (especially Hatfield)

Newbie From across the pond in Scotland but gotta say:
The Big Dish

King Crimson or the Crimson Project? Fripps the difference.
I personally liked the "Islands" and "Larks Tongues/Starless" bands best. I am Bruford fan as well as Fripp fan.
KC had some many completely different bands and at times some very bizarre music.
-

King Crimson - Prog
Happy the Man- Prog USA

So if you wish to talk about any other obscure Progressive Rock bands please...let's do!
The Beatles
Nice list! I usually have BB Kings Bluesville on Sirius, however recently I have been spending a lot of time on Deep tracks. Almost every one on your list is well represented on that channel. Going to see Crimson (recent iteration) in about a week at the Rochester Jazz Fest.
Got to see Kotke when he opened for the Eagles at a community College in Buffalo, been a fan since (tickets were $8 IIRC)!
To add to your list, though they may not fit the OP's intent as they have rabid followers; John Prine, tom Waits, Van Morrison.....et al!
-
Illinois Speed Press. Still listen to Kal David who was a member.
Wishbone Ash
NRBQ
Too many to list!
-
Tangerine Dream wrote the sound track to "Grand Theft auto 5" so surprisingly teenagers today may be spending longer listening to Tangerine Dream than Beyonce!
Not bad for a KroutRock band from half a century ago.
Also did the sound track to "Thief' ( with James Caan)
-
Man, just yesterday I was going to mention Illinois Speed Press. There was a follow-up record with just the 2 main guys that was just as good.
-
Brian Auger Trinity / Oblivion Express
Climax Blues Band
This thread has kicked open some creaky old memory doors

Fantastic picture!
I was also in a band, not sure it could have done much more, as we played some King Crimson, Mahavishnu Orchestra as well as some blues.

Can we upgrade to Bands that should be doing better, The Living End why they aren't a house hold name outside their home country I don't know, Digital order who knows they just might and Evol Walks.
-
Ok Bands that should be doing better:
Dead Daisies

OK I admit I'm more of "roots" guy than technique (shredding) guy.
My vote for the most most talented guy (and group) that never got their due....
Jimmy Hall (http://www.allmusic.com/artist/jimmy-hall-mn0000850971/biography (http://www.allmusic.com/artist/jimmy-hall-mn0000850971/biography)) and Wet Willie (http://www.wetwilliemusic.com/about.html (http://www.wetwilliemusic.com/about.html)) . Hall can outsing, outplay, and out stage presence Mick Jagger any day of the week and twice on Sunday.
Rendezvous with the Blues never leaves the console in my car. His "Change Gonna Come" and "Long Distance Call" will set your hair on end it's so soulful. "His Money Don't Matter" must be his theme song as his never got the recognition or the money he deserved.
Give him a listen if you're not already a fan
