G5 Rear Drive Disassembly

I hate the thought of rebuilding my entire bike without putting eyes on the rear drive internals and vapor blasting the case.  Is it one of those systems that is better left alone?  Will I need any super expensive special tools?

No special tools. The flange with large seal and bearing can sometimes be difficult to remove. I use a 3-legged puller with the legs reversed (hooks pointed outward) to catch the splines in the hub and pull it out.

If you're stripping it completely down to replace both seals, you'll need to warm the housing to ~ 200 degrees F in order for the outer race of the needle bearing to drop out, for access to the small seal.

What Charlie said. Do the inner seal if messing with it, that one will get you when you least expect it (when you decide to go for a long ride and are far from home)

If you change cover gasket thickness you will change the gear contact patch. You don't really want to change the gear contact patch. So just be aware when you replace the gasket (or re-use the original with a bit of sealant).
I'm only commenting because I've seen quite a difference in thickness on purchased paper gaskets.
