Don't know the details, but probably didn't get rollerized.  Dead at 44K.

Thought I read something about a hole in the sump that went undetected until it was too late (?)

A lot of worthwhile spares for any 8V CARC bike owner.

Perfect bike for a 1400 transplant!!!

Not that easy Mike. To get it to work you really need to use a 1200 block and there are a host of other things that need changing. I'm having to go back to square one on the Stelvio conversion which is annoying.

There are also problems with the breathing system when you go to 1400. There simply isn't enough crankcase volume.

Not all 12's were flat tappets. Mine came from the factory with rollers. Has 58,000 miles on it now and runs great. Oh, and it's also for sale. My time has come where I won't be riding long distance any more.

Well...I'll be damned...that's Sam Baker's bike.  He rode with me and Twowings back in 2016 when we all met up in John Day on our 3 Norges, and we rode back from Oregon thru Montana and to Wyoming.  What a pity his bike blew up...now I know why we haven't seen him active lately.  I wonder if he got another Guzzi or not...

Is/was it a roller or flattie?

That is a shame. especially as you got it sussed a year or so back with Beetle’s one. Must be a clue there what is different, prob deserves it’s own thread  , is always interest in how you solve these issues ( and the differences in  cases / volume 1200/1400, is it not possible to fit 1400 cases?)

It's the 1400 case that is the main issue. The 1400's use a different phase sensor and phonic wheel. Substituting the 1200 wheel is easy enough. The sensor? Not so much as it's position has to be accurate.

Strangely the 1400 sump appears to be smaller but there is less crap hanging about inside it which adds greater volume. Before I do a baffle plate I'm going to build up a 1400 sump to try on Mark's 1400 and see what happens. It may be just enough if we lower the oil level a tad.

We actually bought 1400 sumps for both our bikes years ago but never got round to fitting them.

my misunderstanding, thought I had read first one was successful
venting it like old way or racebike would be an option, not tuv approved of course .
I’ve never built a huge capacity motor but there are a few big daytone engines about, actually a couple at Broadford last week
1280 or 1380 in magni chassis ex raceco now in Sydney
worth a look at, pics on net I’m sure

OOPS
have you separated breather from oe airbox etc?
into box with big drain under oil level, vent from top to catch tank.
as mentioned there are a few high revving big bores about on racetrack so is not reinventing (pun intended) the wheel
MGS01. system prob absolute work of art, just copy /adapt that , is pdf parts book on this old tractor

Don't want to go  to such a dirty system unless unavoidable. The main problem with all of the 8V bikes isn't the design of the breather system it's its volume! Unfortunately space, especially on a Griso, is at a premium. Working out where to put improvements is the tricky bit.

First step will be trying a couple of PCV valves in the breather pipes. Then a sump swap. Then an auxiliary separator.

#3 gets the win

Griso frame lends itself nearly invisibly, has volume in spades
bit of ag tapping & welding but drastic calls for drastic
think spiney with two big drain hoses . top vent could possibly still go to airbox if you really need “clean “. but catchtank is environmentally friendly esp if nothing caught

Not a fan of using the frame. I've washed too much crud out of frames to be happy with it. It's a possibility though.

same here but always blamed owner, if engine never to temp the mayo will come
but big drain hoses help
as will stat on cooler
absolute rule —-don’t start it if it ain’t gonna get good and warm
no mayo in a race bike or my roadies, I walk before I torture engines with 5 min rides

Hi everyone. Can you tell me what is the CARC shield and for what reason people use it? Honestly, I have seen it at first.

Hi everyone. Can you tell me what is the CARC shield and for what reason people use it? Honestly, I have seen it at first.

It's there to prevent the casting getting buggered up in the event of a drop.

I've always been a bit ambivalent about the idea as it mounts on the brake mounting spigots. I've always worried that a heavy hit would break off the casting lugs and since the castings aren't, and never were, available as a spare part any breakage would mean the purchase of a new bevelbox for bulk dollars.

Luckily after ten years of production and the fact that the bevelboxes are very reliable there are enough spares and cases around that such considerations are now irrelevant. FWIW my Griso has a 'Naked' CARC but my Stelvio has a guard. In all honesty though the reason the Stelvio has one is a bit of entirely cosmetic wank! Yup! I'm a wanker! :violent1:
