End of the line for my V9 Roamer
« on: August 03, 2019, 04:31:29 PM »
I was out for an afternoon ride this past Wednesday when someone decided they would pull out in front of me. Luckily I was wearing all the right gear and after being in the ER for about 4 hours was released with bruising on the chest, a couple of bruised ribs, scraped up shins and some monster bruises on my upper legs I was fortunate and able to walk out of the ER under my own power. Nothing broken and no internal damage!

Glad you were not hurt more!

Bikes can be replaced....humans not so much.

This is why we stress ATGATT so much... how much more would have been your injuries
had you been wearing less??

Very glad you escaped with so little bodily damage! There might some interest here in more details of what you were wearing, and how your helmet came through, if you're up to it.

It looks like all the bike damage is confined to the fork and its attachments. (Of course the frame could be bent.) Lots of good parts left!

Hope you get back to normal quickly. Best wishes.

That is a hard hit! Lucky as you are you will be sore, perhaps in unexpected places, for several days or more. Good on you, for being prepared.

I was wearing a Nolan N104 Evo modular helmet, Olympia gloves, Tourmaster Solution boots and a Joe Rocket Phoenix jacket with D30 armor in the shoulders, back and elbows. The paramedics said it looked like I went over the front of the bike and my helmet hit the side of the van first with the rest of my body right behind. The ER doctor said it would have been a completely different conversation if I was not wearing the gear, especially of course the helmet. It would have been serious head trauma.

The dealer is going to pick the bike up from the swing company on Tuesday. Of course it appears that the person who pulled out in front of me has no insurance.

WOW!  Sorry to hear.

Can you give more details as to what type of road you were riding on?

Residential, rural, shopping district?

Did he pull out of a side street, cross street, parking lot?

How fast were you travelling?

I'm glad you will heal up and be able to ride again.

Today I went down to ride in a wildlife management area.  Nice gravel and dirt roads in the woods and along a river.  On the way home I ended up on a main road and decided to stop for lunch.  Watching all the traffic on the road convinced me to go out of the restaurant the back way and take a different route home with little traffic.  No pleasure riding in traffic so I avoid it as much as possible. Shopping districts are the worst.

I had a bad get off that resulted in joining the Titanium Brotherhood. My co-workers were confused as to why I still ride. I can't do otherwise.

The V85 sits to high for me. I was at the dealer and was actually looking at V7 III Stone Night Pack, but kept going back to the V9. Maybe a Bobber? I am in no rush. The wife says in the end the decision is up to me, but she said I should ask other people who have crashed if they had any second thoughts about riding again. She also asked me to try to wait till next spring before making a decision.

That is funny. My wife and I were talking a week or so about what I would do if I quit riding and we talked about getting a Miata.

When I was laying in the hospital with an infection in my spine my wife asked me to consider replacing motorcycles with another hobby since she didn't want to have to go through watching me in pain from a wreck.

To appease her I test rode just about every sports car under $60k.  Quickly realized that I prefer two seaters and that some of the sports cars were too capable which made them boring if you weren't doing double the speed limit.

The Miata bubbled to the top of my list as a very engaging car to drive, as well as economical to own.  The low stance would make it more dangerous on the Tennessee roads that I enjoy because the sight distance is shorter than when sitting up on a bike and there isn't much room left on the road if the oncoming driver is taking up more than his half of the road.

Also, I can insure all my bikes per year what it cost to insure my truck for 6 months.

My issue with another car is I only have a two car garage and I like to keep our vehicles garaged. The bike, my wife CR-V and my Cherokee all fit in the garage nicely.

Here at home and more so in southern Spain where I have a flat I often see people riding in shorts, t-shirt, sandals, and a helmet when it´s hot. I am too much a coward to do this. ATGATT! And your story confirmed that for me.
Greetings from Germany!

Word to the wise....NEVER, EVER say, "I hit" when referring to the crash.
"We collided", "when the collision/incident occurred", but never say you hit him. It implies liability/fault. And will be twisted and used against you.

I got run over from a car from behind a few years ago.  Head trauma etc.  Still have lingering effects (Brain) from that accident.  Went back to riding but it was a very slow and painful process.  Now Im going on 62 and am thinking of giving up riding.  Its getting just too dangerous out there with all the distracted drivers etc.  Might be bike selling and Miata buying time sooner than I thought!  Decisions Decisions.....
