No need. You've explained what you meant - I didn't have the back-story about corporations working for other corporations and the hassles that go along with that. And "entertaining" is generally a good thing .... !Lannis
ya know, if either of you had "real jobs" to begin with.......
Really? WTF do you know about my job?
Sure looked like he was making a joke to me...
Well, I worked for a large corporation for decades. Over 40,000 employees around the globe if I recall. I couldn't wait to work at a small company. I got a job at a company with only 15 employees. Worse decision of my life. The reasons are far too complicated to write out, but it was pretty bad. I suspect if you boil it down, in a large company if a co-worker is a loser, there are enough good workers to pull the weight and get the job done. In a small company, if your coworker is a loser, you are the only other person to pull the entire load. And if the loser is good friends with management, you are hosed. And looking for a job change in your late 50s and 60s, is a bad thing.
Real Jobs I've had (working a sewage treatment plant, sweeping streets, garbage collection, cleaning campground bathrooms), I can see why a lifetime of the Real Jobs might change one's perspective ....
I do look forward to being able to make my own schedule, and not be beholden to others' demands.
For us the key was being out of debt, forever. We sold a home that had ridden inflation to dizzying heights, and bought our new place, on the other side of the state, for cash. Luck, maybe, .....
I hear this a lot "I can't afford to retire." You can if you change your lifestyle by no longer eating imported Kobe beef from Japan, using saffron for your main spice, wearing silk drawers, driving a $90,000 King Ranch Ford and the list goes on.I retired at 50 and changed my lifestyle because I'd rather travel instead of buying stuff that I'd just lose in a divorce.Too many work to get that last big check and ultimate retirement only to have medical problems and not enjoy all that money.Enjoy,Tex
Lannis,Glad it is working out for you, but I read on the internet that you wouldn't be giving up wearing the silk drawers 'Tex
.No plans no advice, no consulation or spread sheets, just shooting from the hip like I always do..What's the worst that can happen? ......Oh, what did my wife think of me retiring on the spot? " that's ok, I trust your judgement even though it's often a bit crazy"...
See what you think about that when you’re retired at 65 (or earlier) and she has at least 15 years of paying for medical insurance ahead of her... in other words make sure she remains healthy, has a good job with her own benefits, likes it, and won’t be relying on you for medical insurance. Otherwise you may be working longer than you think
Sick society when people are forced to work themselves all the way to the grave to ensure they have medical insurance; paying 20-70% of their income for healthcare so that some insurance executive can get a 7-figure paycheck for pushing numbers around a spreadsheet and optimizing a system in which paying customers are denied or extorted to pay extra for the very care that insurance is supposed to... uh, ensure.Hopefully we will come to our senses sometime in the next 1.5-15 years and catch up with the rest of the civilized world. I certainly hope so.
I did that once. Bought a new Harley Davidson that cost 40% of what I grossed in a year, no plans, no advice, no consultation, no spread sheets.I still have the scars. I'll never do it again!Lannis
she also told me that people that retire and *don't do anything* don't last long either. I've built airplanes, motorcycles, and traveled the country. You absolutely *have* to have something to do that makes your life worthwhile to you. If your work is your life, you'd better not retire. She's seen that one, too. Many times. <shrug>
If it's scars from your wife beating you, that's one thing... but if it's scars from money ill spent...Not worth worring about...While I have no plans I do have an image in my mind of the completion no matter what it is..Then just fill in steps on the way to the goal with whatever means are at hand..Stay light on your feet, sway with the wind, be ready to change direction instantly...And never bite off more than you can chew.....
