I have an 82 the V45 Sabre guise.   Bought it in 1987.  My first street bike.  I recently got it running again with some help from a local independent cycle shop mechanic.

No bike left behind I always say !

Gotta love the 80's bikes

That's pretty cool. Ive decided to enjoy the bike for what it is. A semi ruining project. Hopefully soon to be reliable. I really have enjoyed everyone sharing their experiences. More responses and knowledgeable help than i anticipated. Ill keep you all updated on when it's running again.

I looked at them in '86, but chose the Shadow 700 because it looked so much better.  I had no need or want for excess power at the extra cost.

Hope you get it sorted.  A friend had a V45 with electrical problems that he could never get sorted so he finally gave up and junked it.

A good friend had one of those Shadow 700's and it was a great bike. He ended up getting a HD Dyna in the 90's, but I think his son kept the Shadow..  Sadly we lost my buddy on new years day this year..  53 and gone.. dont wait to make plans!!

"A semi ruining project..."  Lets hope not! I saw a cool custom of one of the these a couple of weeks ago at the Garage Brewed Moto Show in Cincinnati.  Lighting wasn't very good so I didn't get a pic.  Looked something like this PhotoShop number and was for sale as I recall.

Had the V45 for years. As people said, fast with a solid motor. Carbs needed regular cleaning and the rear seals could leak if the bike was pushed hard by a young,  inexperienced rider looking to take off fast from every stop light  :violent1:.  Handling geometry meant it was never a "sports bike" but for an early cruiser it was dah' bomb.  Enjoy.

82 has the cam problem. They fixed em for 83 I am told. My brother put a lot of miles on his with no problem.
With a passenger the front gets light.
They were pretty durable bikes.
Most people got tired of the feet high and forward seating position. Many got parked and never ridden again. Don't know why.

Some 83's still had a lot of cam issues. I had an 83 V65 Magna, no problem. A friend had an 83 V65 Saber, it lost the top end. Something about differences in the oil plumbing.
My 83 XL600 ate the cam. Soft parts. I redid the top end and the replacement parts appeared to be good.

I never could get used to the feet up and forward position. But I always remember the feeling of twisting the throttle and that motor coming alive.

Yeah, I had a Sabre. Added a pressure line to the top end and blocked off the one they had. It *is* an endearing motor..when it's running.
