Late to the rollerization party...but I have a question
« on: January 11, 2021, 02:09:19 PM »
Hi all!  So I have a low mileage 2012 Stelvio, original flat tappet engine.  Decided to swap to roller tappets before there is an issue.  I got the kit last summer, just getting to it today.  The bottom of the cam box is quite a bit different.  My question is with regard to the sealing between the bottom of the cam box and the top of the head around the spark plug hole.  My cam box has a sleeve with an o-ring groove in both the head and the cam box.  The new cam box has no o-ring groove.  What is the proper assembly?  I do have a set of o-rings in the kit.  Do I just remove the sleeve from my old cam box, insert it in the head, put an o-ring around it and sandwich it between the cam box and head?  Please see photo.

You need the newer style valve covers w/flat rubber seal if you have a cambox w/o a tube oring groove.

Pretty sure on this but let me check.

Edit:    Got it wrong, if cambox/rocker tower has no oring groove it is for non-floating covers.

Dont know if it's an issue with the image but the cam in that roller lifter assembly looks cooked. Is this a new kit?

That's the black grease that comes on cam.

Yes, new kit.  And yes, it's smeared with grease or moly; something for initial lube.

Ah, got it thanks. I thought that something was amiss as what appeared to be damage was also on the base circle.

Does the new design also need something under the cam box to seal it to the head, since there is no tube?

According to my notes - it is the A-kit that will be correct for your 2012 Stelvio.

I'm reliably informed you have the B kit when you need the A kit.

Uh-oh.  What's the difference?  My cylinders have the drill spot if that helps.

Covers that float are A & D kits, covers w/tube are B & C kits

Marks are for B kit

Maybe they supplied you w/wrong rocker tower cambox. should have a # cast in  ending in 2067 R/H and 2064 L/H

Late model floating rocker tower/cambox #    2062 R/H  &  2061 L/H

I ran into the same problem with my 12' Stelvio. Received the B kit and had it installed and when I went to put on the valve covers discovered it was not the correct kit. Had to pull it off and return it to dealer to swap for the A kit. Lucky for me the dealer had some one that had run into the reverse problem so we exchanged kits. Hopefully your supplier can do an exchange for you.

They all have tubes!!   Floating cover have a short one PT# 879987,  non-floater has a long one PT# 873668

The factory really laid an egg with the design from the beginning and now they flub the solution. What a series of blunders.

No kidding, this whole thing was so unfortunate and it gave a black eye to what were and still are a great line of bikes. I loved my Stelvio and once correctly rollered I put many miles on it with no issues. Only reluctantly let it go when due to my age not the bikes a lighter ride became what I needed to keep on the road.

Well, there's a solution if kit is wrong, just get the other valve covers.
Edit: That doesn't work either according to Pete, different tower heights and they'll crack.
Make's me glad I retired.
There are still mass amounts of bikes to be fixed, unwanted.

Well, this sure is a can of worms then, isn’t it?  I’m glad I’m finding it now.  I don’t see any casting number that matches the above in my new pieces.  I’ll put photos of my new right side box here.  Can anyone ID these numbers?  BTW, I have .6625 long tubes if that matters.
I’m retiring in a couple months and need to get this sorted and reliable for some good riding

.  I sure appreciate the help!

I ran those part # at AF1 site w/no results. Numbers I posted were from Technical Bulletin #2014-004 that's in my service files from working at dealer. You first start by what covers you have. This to see which kit A & D or B & C.
It should say what kit you have printed on box. I been out of this for 4yrs(last one I changed). Pete R is still doing them he's over at the Ghetto. Michael is doing the hard stuff. We are all retiring. Glad I don't own any newer Guzzi's.

If it makes you feel any better, when I rollerized my Griso I ordered the wrong kit as well. A lot of bad information on the internet as to which kit goes where. Put it on the bike only to have it leak oil like the Exxon Valdez. Got the correct kit and did it all again.  Practice makes perfect I guess. Was able to sell the wrong kit online to recover most of my money.

I actually ordered it by year and engine serial number.  I didn't specify A,B, C, or D kit.  I'm trying to work through this issue now.
