Oil light stays on after oil change
« on: July 15, 2022, 04:15:54 PM »
I just finished changing the oil on my V11 Sport Cafe Coppa Italia.  As usual I completely removed the oil sump including detaching the oil line at the rear.  Changed out the filter and replaced the sump.  Filled it with 4 qts of oil. I started the engine up and the oil light would not go off! I let it run for a few seconds and shut it off.  Started it again and shut it off again after a few seconds as the oil light still stayed lit.

Now I do not want to start it again until I can figure out what is going on here. Any ideas?  Anyone had this problem in the past?  I am wondering it I could have damaged the oil pump but I really don't see how that could have happened.  Also wondering if something has blocked up the oil line perhaps.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Bad sensor, common issue. I would crack loose the oil lines to heads & start it to see if you have oil. Clean up the mess later, at least you see it or not.

This is a long stretch, but could the new filter be defective?  Extremely rare possibility, but you never know....

Good suggestions and good places top start.  Thanks. I will order some new filters just in case.

Thanks!

I always fill the filter with oil also at least half way after soaking in.

Did you remove the plastic “seal” from the filter when you unboxed it?
If so, do what GS said…

Loose oil filter is my guess.  You might check if the old filter gasket is stuck.  I'd reinstall the filter or replace it as first effort.  Most like Bosch 3330 filters vs Ufi.

Don't run the engine with no oil pressure.

Did the old thick rubber gasket come off with the old filter or could you have two of those seals on top of each other?

You have good answers. Might need to double check or change the filter again.

One thing people don't always think of. "If you need to drain the oil again. Use a very clean drain pan to catch the brand new oil you may be draining so that you can pour it back in when your done with the pan.

Lots of good sugggestions above.

Loose filter
Good catch on ensuring the plastic clear seal is removed, never thought of that
Did you fill the filter before installing? If not it can take a short while to fill the filter, more than a few (5-10 seconds?), but probably no longer than 30 seconds to establish pressure
Double gasketing or no gasket can result in a large leak and failure for pressure to build
Did you remove the spacer too, just in case you did and had the internals out, I'd check the base gaskets at the top of the spacer are the right way round.

What I'd do in that situation is remove the filter and check the gasket plus a general look around, if all Ok or something rectified then check the connections at the oil pressure switch.

Remove the plugs and crank it (either pull the injection relay or ground the plugs somewhere clear of the cylinders, if the relay isn't pulled you'll be spraying some gas) to check. That way your not unduly loading the bigends. I'd either put on a gauge or as suggested pull the switch (but that will be messy) to check for pressure.

As already mentioned don't run the engine until it's sorted

John

That was my first thought. Did you install the pan gasket wrong, or did it get damanged in a way that left the oil ports unsealed?

+1 on the old rubber gasket, stuck to the housing. It was exhibit exactly how you describe, immediately following an oil change.
Happened to me once on my Sport 1100. Drained the oil (twice)trying to figure this out.

Pan gasket messed up.
Oil pump not priming.
May be the sensor. Especially if it got wet.

As mentioned, loosen an oil feed line and start it to be sure. Or at least pull the pan again and verify that the gasket is correct.

Gentlemen,

Thanks to all! I dug through my garbage this morning, found the old filter and, sure enough, the gasket was missing. Gee, I wonder where is might be!

Looks like I made a real amateur mistake which makes total sense when I think about it.

You guys are the best!

Thanks

Sport engine doesn't have a spacer like the Californias.

I thought they were "Broadsumps" in which case they do have a spacer, that flares out to accomodate the wider pan

It's held on by separate set of bolts internally, but the spacer can be removed and the gaskets installed wrong.

I initially mentioned it as a long shot, you wouldn't drop it though if just cleaning the pan but it can be removed without too much effort.

BUT that's ASS-uming the V11 is a broadsump, I'm not 100% certain

My EV has a spacer and gaskets on both sides.  If you get one of the gaskets upside down, you'll get an oil light.  Don't tell me how I know this.

My V11 Sport has no spacer, at least nothing comes off with the pan.  The pan also has manhole cover to change the filter, but the filter has to fit in the hole with the right wrench to tighten it.  It's also easy to cross thread the manhole too.

My pan has a manhole cover also but I gave up on using it years ago.  As you said, it is easy to cross thread and just plain difficult to get it back on properly.  In addition, I read (probably on this forum) years ago that some V11 owners had issues with the filter coming loose and suddenly losing oil pressure. I adopted a quick fix of attaching a hose clamp to the filter in such a way as to insure that it can not spin loose.
Of course, now I have to worry that the hose clamp might slip off! No free lunch!

The spacer on yours is likely bolted to the block separately, and stays attached when you remove the pan.

Just a warning, when using a filter like the Bosch with a stick on label remove it first or the hot oil will. It will then plug something!
