What grease?
« on: April 14, 2023, 05:31:07 AM »
I am putting my rear drive unit back together and have the recommended moly additive to help the grease to remain on the drive shaft, UJ's, etc.  However, I am unsure what type of grease to actually use as i have several in the garage and can't remember which one is suitable.  thanks.

The general consensus is there is no general consensus on what to use. We all have our preferred.  Some folks are the Walter White's of spline lube mix different lubes and moly together to create their special blend. I say pick one of the hundreds of spline lubes readily available and use it.

I see what you mean!  I remember reading somewhere of a mix of two types...one of which was this BMW moly

which I will blend with this Silkolene grease unless there's any reason not to

Thanks

The wise citizens, who know absolutely nothing about lubrication, are constantly developing new miracle greases that the oil companies are ignorant of. The proper mixtures of lithium, molybdenum, calcium, goose grease, olive oil, and bacon fat have been left out of commercial greases. Thankfully there are enough alchemists to make Wonder Greases to allow rubbing surfaces to last forever.

Are you mixing by weight or volume and under vacuum or at atmosphere? If you get it wrong the lab could explode.

I see that Silkolene RG2 is labeled as "synthetic racing grease" not sure how that will work in a "street" application or if its even legal under Euro 5 restrictions. You may have to pull one sparkplug or ride the rear brake to control the extra HP the "racing grease" could create. I hear it's like adding 2 aftermarket powerbands.

Mr P-MX14 included the word I left out, "Racing". With that word on the label, your conveyance can achieve almost uncontrollable speed if the product is not used with discretion.

remfanuk, the Staburag is all you'll need for this and you don't need to mix anything. When it comes time to fill the gear oil it is recommended to add a small amount moly lube to the gear oil. The proper amounts will be listed in your manual or Guzziology. Hope this helps.

Very true.  Science is never settled.  There is always room for innovation and improvement.

Home made, custom blended, secret recipe greases are always the best choice.  Especially when human emotions are the object needing the most protection from unwanted friction and wear!

I am happy to go with this...maybe I mis-remembered what should be mixed, confusing a small quantity in the oil rather than added to a different grease.  Thank you, even though not using the racing grease will cost me at least 15bhp!

thanks guys.
