Hello. About to start sorting out the wiring on my 1980 'Mock 1' Le Mans. If that doesn't go up in smoke I'll then roll onto the 1973 850 GT.

I'll likely be asking the odd question along the way.

I'm not going the Motogadget way, I'll be upgrading or replacing the existing loom and adding relays, fuses, maybe updating some components.

The small amount of money the new harness costs eliminates 10X its cost in frustration and cobbling together 50-year-old discolored wiring and brittle connectors.

I've been looking at Greg's harnesses but I may build my own, for a bunch of reasons. I'm over in Finland so importing stuff isn't cheap is one.

I'm also retired and enjoy wiring, and there seems to be a lot wrong with the original Guzzi harness design that I'd like to improve. The whole hot ignition, lights and coils for example, and the starter circuit. I'm looking to relay lights, horn and coils. I'd also like to install Deutsch weatherproof connectors on the harness.

My Le Mans was a LM II conversion and has piranha electronic ignition, stock fusebox, regulator and rectifier, coils under the tank and I think it has the Bosch alternator with the energised rotor. I'd like to add a weatherproof fuse/relay unit, new coils, and likely change the electronic ignition.

Switches, lights, the whole front end was rewired, but I've only just started digging so I'll see how it looks

Wiring is an exercise in chasing perfection. Like lacing wheels, it has to be learned slowly.  I’ve done Motogadget and it was a great but time consuming and expensive experience. In retrospect I wish I had started with a simpler bike first, not the G5. Quality wire in different colors, tools,  terminal gear, looms and heat shrink get expensive quickly.  I cut out and re-fabricated so many sections that didn’t fit or look right as I went along. I’m lucky that my current v7 sport project came with a full Greg Bender harness ready to install.  It’s sitting in the garage, exquisitely bagged and labeled and whispering to me…

I have to say I laughed out loud when I saw this. The LM 1 conversion appears to consist of cutting off the three original Molex connectors, then splicing in the handlebar switchgear, headlight, indicators, horn and ignition. No correct wires, insulated crimps (badly done, a few came apart in my hands), no relays

Today is multimeter day, need to ID all the handlebar switch wires (every single wire is connected to brown :) ) and test some of the bits like coils, reg/rec etc

You didn’t need to strip all that wiring off, just run new wire over the top of it!  Har Har!
Seriously though, rewiring makes one plan ahead. The three yellows from the alternator usually need some attention at their first connectors behind the steering head. They have a habit of getting loose and corroding .

If you try to re-use that plastic(bakelite?) connector you will need female connectors with a tab to keep the three wires connected to the plastic part.
