V85 tt in the heat

Guys, I was driving the other day here in the Carolinas, and I notice that is was really getting hot.

How much heat can the V85 handle idling and for how long?   

Should I turn it off when it is idling in traffic?

If traffic is the kind where you move 15 feet every minute or so I turn mine off and push it. I'd not use the V85tt for commuting where traffic jams are liable.

Do the bikes come with an engine temp warning? I assume that’s only good for the temperature in the block, and may not be useful for concerns near the exhaust.

I’ve never met any air cooled Guzzi that’s happy stopped in heavy traffic on very hot days.  If you’re at a standstill, turn it off.

I suspect since Guzzi nor aftermarket has made an oil cooler available, the "heat" issue must not be a problem, possibly.  However, one of my riding buds had an issue with his tube tire type v85 back in '22 when we got caught in an interstate parking lot.  I don't recall how his engine sounded at the time other than it sounded like something was seriously about to let go.  Once off the highway  and aware of the rumors of heat effects on the engine, we parked. went had lunch, came back, checked the oil level which was ok, started the bike, all was good, no nasty sounds.  The bike has been fine since.

Definitely worth being careful over.   I will keep these thoughts shared by you guys in mind.  The other day, I found myself in City traffic and hit the turn off switch a couple of times. 

My next question is this;  Does the engine receive more wear when you turn it off for a couple of minutes and then turn it on?  Does this actually help the engine not to overheat?

In such conditions if you must ride, make sure you let the engine rev higher but with less throttle applied during acceleration phase. You will run less risk of pre ignition (pinging, detonation) if you do his.

I spent last summer commuting on my V7 in Texas which meant a lot of days sitting in traffic on 100* days. Never noticed any issues with the bike. Is the V85 that substantially different that heat would be more of an issue?

As a slight aside, any idea how accurate the oil temp gauge on the UpMap device is?

I had the same concerns.  I didn't like the heat coming off the CAT under the motor on my V85.  The cat was just cooking the oil in the trans and motor.


I ended up removing the cat. I put an Agostinis's header/crossover combo, remapped and kept the stock muffler.   There was a huge drop in the heat coming off the exhaust.

This was worth the cost IMHO
