reassembling my '70 ambassador, I notice that the rear brake stay rod rubs against the nut on the hub.  am I doing something wrong?

Not uncommon. If it bothers you, insert the front end of the rod the other way through the brake bellcrank.

IIRC, this is pre-internet and before joining the MGNOC, I bent mine for clearance.

Replace the missing nut on the distal end of the brake stay before you take it on the road

Here's an easy fix. Take the brake rod at the front-end. Over the swing arm and make sure the 90° bend goes through the hole from the outside. So the Cotter pin is behind the bracket that will move the rod off that bolt, a good eighth of an inch, and you'll have plenty of clearance. I just looked at the eldo, that's in my shed, and that's how that is set up, give it a try, pretty sure it'll work for you.
