Jackal conversion gas tank question
« on: January 18, 2015, 08:06:09 PM »
My first post...looking for some help with my 2001 Jackal conversion.
I have followed and few great Jackal/La Mans conversion threads and my learning curve is steep. First Guzzi (I've had old flat heads for years) and first project. Please have a look at this T Tank I plan on using and first tell me what it was from? also I was hoping since this tank has 3 access ports I'd like ideas about which would work best for fuel input return and sensor locations.

also having hard time inserting a photo

I can't help with specifics about that tank (especially since I can't see it), but I can list some features of the Jackal tank.

There are 3 main fittings and 2 vents/drains.

The Jackal tank uses an electro-mechanical fuel petcock toward the rear left underside of the tank, but can use a plain mechanical petcock if desired.

Right in front of the petcock is the fuel level sensor.

At the very front of the tank is a large fitting with the fuel pressure regulator/return line.

IIRC there is a small evap/vent fitting near the front too.

And I believe there is a small drain/filler neck overflow line on a fitting under the central portion of the tank.

Granted all of this is from memory and it's been a few years. So hopefully someone will chime in if I'm remembering something wrong.

He is having difficulty posting pics but I believe he is trying to use a Convert gas tank and is trying to identify the plug forward of the petcock on the left. The Lemans tank I mounted on my Jackal I used the left side for the petcock and the right side for the return line.

that's for the low fuel sender.. plug it or use the wires for a low fuel light.

host pics elsewhere like photobucket and link here w/the IMG code.

My project used a Lemans 2 tank and used the stock fittings for fuel in and out to the external pump.  I added a third bung for the low fuel light but it isn't necessary.

I used a Lemans 3 tank on my bike.  I added the third fitting for the fuel level indicator.   I used hydraulic hose fittings that I did a little machine shop work to.  Like you, I am not a big fan of all the hoop I have to go thru to post pictures.  If you send me a PM with your e-mail I will send you some pictures of the fitting I used and the tank installation.  My bike came with a manual petcock.  The tank fittings on the Jackal and the older tank should all be the same.  I used the rubber bumpers under the tank.  The one in the center that is used at the front towards the steering neck is not tall enough.  I used some high density rubber and a zip tie to hold it on.  I also made a couple of tabs that I mounted on the steering neck to hold the front of the tank on.  If you are not going to use the original seat, I used the seat bracket to hold the back of the tank on.  I turned it around 180 degrees and bent the two tabs that slide into the bottom of the seat up slightly and put rubber hose over the tabs to hold the back of the tank down.

If you do a search here on WG for my post, you will see some pictures of my silver bike.

Thanks for the responses.
Still having trouble posting the photo. If it wasn't for MMNorth taking my calls  :) I'd be a little lost.
I understand the forward port in my convert tank is the low fuel sensor location....the tank still has the sensor in it....not sure if it works. I'd rather leave it in place and use it if possible...not really thinking about adapting the newer Jackal tank sensor.

The fuel sensor isn't needed.  Those two bungs in the back will work perfectly with the external pump Jackals.  I have no experience with the in-tank models.  Your convert tank should provide miles of smiles.  DW

sure, just leave it (fuel sender)  in there as a plug.. use your trip meter to not run out of gas.

I am using that model tank with efi.  The fittings fit.  I did pull from the left and return to the right.  You lose about a quart of useable gas due to the tunnel keeping the full supply from getting from right to left.  The filler cap is vented so you don't need to worry about that plumbing, and the filler neck is raised so you don't need the well drain, either.

I also found I needed to position the rear of the tank just right to clear the efi throttle linkage.  Rotating the rear mount donuts gives enough, but you need to pay attention.  I discovered that the pressure regulator (sits on the right spigot) will contact the linkage, stopping it at about 3/4WO just when you go to pass on a mountain hill.  A truly Oh-oh moment that I'll invite you to avoid.

I have never run with a low fuel light plumbed up.  I do carry spare gas.

My set up consist of putting the fuel return pressure regulator on the right petcock outlet.  Same threads.  Toss the electric petcock and buy a new one with a filter built in and pulled about 10 feet of fuel line and fuel filter off the bike. I found a s.s. fitting that is used in the  beer brewing industry to replace the "y" setup you get with the o.e.m. fuel filter set up.  Small and the correct o.d. for the fuel injection hose I used to replace all the stuff I tossed.   I used two hydraulic hose fittings that I did some additional machining to for a fuel level gage bung and nut assembly.  I welded one piece on the tank and slide the fuel level gage through the new bung and tightened the nut.   The steering neck is longer and the taps that hold the fuel tank front down are higher.  I made two pieces of aluminum 1/4 x 3/4 by about 1-1/2 long , drilled a hole in one end and attached to the steering neck to hold the front down.  I used oem rubber and layered up with some additional rubber sheet on the center frame tube.  I used 4, of the left and right rear rubber cushions.  2 on each side at rear.  Need to watch for the clearance of the tank seam on the bottom hitting the oil lines on the back side of the heads.  I changed seats,  I took the seat mount off, bent the two ears up, turned around 180 degrees, slid some rubber heater hose over the two tabs and used this to hold the back of the tank down.  I have a Lemans 3 tank installed.  It can be done.  If you leave the fuel level sensor off, it makes for a much easier project.  No machine shop, no welding, no prep and painting.  I do not do pictures on  w.g.
