California 1400 Custom: Where is the GPS plug?
« on: January 23, 2015, 10:28:10 PM »
I understand there is a GPS plug under the tank.  Do I need to pull the tank to get at it?  Thanks.

You shouldn't have to. It should be hiding behind the cover around the steering head. RH side I think?

If you find it, send us a picture. I did not know mine had one. I will have to do a search too.

Thanks. I Took a peak at the wiring diagram and it seemed to confirm right side. I can see a three prong plug behing the cover on the left side. GPS should only be two prong I suspect

I'll post pics of the plug and location hopefully this weekend.

Jeez!  Don't you folks ever read the owner's manual?  No excuse saying your bike didn't come with one, they're free for downloading on the web.  There's lots of useful stuff in those manuals, like what kind of oil to use, so you don't have to rely on the strongly held, but often incorrect, opinions expressed here, which might apply to an entirely different bike.

Confirmed.  That's where it's hiding, originally cable tied I think.

Well boys I couldn't find a GPS plug on the right or left side so here is how I connected my GPS.  I have the Custom model.

I did find the heated grips connectors on the right side and initially tapped into one of those.  Quickly figured out I would have to cycle the heated grip switch to make the GPS charge.  That wasn't going to work.

On the left side there is a three prong plug for the Aux lights.  I don't have Aux lights but you could tap this connector even if you did.  I used positaps.  Green is positive.  Blue is negative.  GPS comes on with the key and quits charging immediately with the ignition off.

I mounted the GPS up a little more than needed so it blocks the annoying flashing cruise light.

If anyone finds the GPS plug please post here.  Maybe the Custom model doesn't have the plug installed into the wiring harness.

In any event this works just as well.

FYI the only mention of the GPS plug in the manual is that it is controlled by fuse no. 6.  The repair manual mentions the plug but the wiring diagram doesn't detail where it is.

Hopefully this helps some people get their GPS installed.

Heated grip connectors on right side:

Aux light plug on left side:

Positaps on Aux plug (note this is before I figured out the correct wires to tap)

GPS mounted (it is a BMW/Garmin Nav V using a Zumo 660 mount on a threaded ram ball replacing top left handlebar clamp bolt)

Hmmm, perhaps I was getting confused with the heated grips connectors.   :-[

Then it has to be under the tank, where they are for the CARC series.  This will mean removing the tank for access.  Not that hard, but don't try it with a full one, as I discovered.

As well as removing the steering head covers, you will have to remove the top chrome plate surrounding the fuel cap, and disconnect the breather (I think that's what it is) and the wires to the fuel pump (again I think).  The fuel line is similar to the CARC ones, except this one has an additional in-line connection a few inches from the one connecting to the tank, which is easier to disconnect.

I would also recommend removing the head covers, or at least cover them with a towel to prevent damage.  The tank is relatively easy to remove after this, but not so to reinstall without scratching the head covers.  That's why I always remove mine before tackling the tank.

Once again, don't do it with a full tank.  And don't ask how I know.

Removing my tank to get to a GPS plug sounds a little ridiculous to me. Here is what I did on my California Custom. I like the USB  too.

I must apologize for my earlier smug post.  I've looked through all of the user's manuals, workshop manuals, and parts catalogs for all of the 1400 cc models available online at guzzitec gb (http://guzzitek.org/gb/accueil_gb.htm), and none of them indicate where the GPS socket is located.  I suppose we're expected to intuit the location.  Sorry.  The GPS socket is shown in the workshop manual for my V7 Stone, but not in the user manual or the parts catalog.  Go figure.

A friend found it under the tank on his 1400 Touring.  Probably the same.

I'm going to assume it is under the tank but I'm leaving mine connected as is until I have a reason to remove the tank.

Nah.  Don't apologize for a post you now regret.  That might be contagious.   ;D

That is an interesting gizmo.  That said -- the USB port understood as a bennie -- lifting the tank is no big deal on the Tonti Calis; surely no harder on the C14 for a dedicated GPS hook-up.

But, I am going to look into that Eklipes thingambob for the EV.  http://www.eklipes.com

I recently got the TomTom and one of the reasons I got it was that the California was prewired. The plug is located under the plastic cowl on the left side. When you pull that off (not all the way because the right side is still attached), you will see the horizontal frame rail. The plug is behind it as far as I can recollect.
