Turn signal problem-update

Something weird is going on with the turn signals on my Ambassador.

With the ignition on, but engine not running, all of the turn signals work normally. I should add that all of the indicators have regular, i.e., incandescent bulbs. But when I start the engine, the turn signals flash (too) rapidly. I've tried two different flashers, and the same thing happens.

I had to get an electronic one on the Cal2, was doing same thing w/Warner regular & heavy duty.

Your flasher may be sensitive to the higher voltage. You're probably driving about 12v without the engine running, 14.5v with the generator running -- or higher if the voltage regulator is wonky.

It would be worth checking to see if the regulator is allowing the battery voltage to get too high.

I'll check the VR when I get a chance--I thought that might be the culprit. But this didn't start happening until I changed out the front indicators; I realize that might be a co-incidence, but I put a different set of indicators on and the problem persists. I also tried some LED bulbs and the problem didn't go away.

I've had to isolate the flasher unit from vibration a little better than it was originally. Still didn't totally fix it though, would still flash irregularly sometimes. Only going to an electronic flasher, like guzzisteve mentions, fixed it for good.

Installed a new, heavy duty flasher, and the turn signals work properly now.
