8V Norge valve cover bolt seals?
« on: April 25, 2015, 11:03:19 AM »
Mine are starting to weep (2k miles after a major service, grrr), I'm wondering if it's a big deal (gas tank and plastic off) or a small deal (back out bolts, replace seals) to perform the work?

2014 Ducati Multistrada GT (for sale)
2011 Norge GT 8V "Otto Valvole" (gone after 32k miles)
2001 BMW R1150 GS (gone after 100,000 miles)

Very small deal.
I'm sure the hardest part will be getting the replacement seals.
You might have to take off the heat deflectors covering the rear of the heads but even then a small deal.
Pull screws, replace seals, snug down but don't over-tighten screws.
The urge to buy terrorizes!

You should be able to lift the back of the tank a bit to allow you sufficient clearance to get the bolts out. Note that there are two different types of tampon, (Yes, that's what they are called.) and depending on what valve cover/plug tube sealing system you have you need to choose the correct type. I'm pretty sure all the Norges use the later type but it's worth checking.

thanks Pete. I'm pretty sure that the part number is 879975, if that makes a difference.

Yup, them's the ones and it appears that as I suspected all the Norge 8V's use the 'Floating' valve covers.

No need to lift the tank on my 2012.  Just loosen them all and change one at a time.  If they changed them at the first service they should put new ones in free, 10 min job

Order two sets and keep one set under the seat just because. When I learned they were called tampons I figured eventual leaks were in order.
