1989 Mille timing info needed
« on: June 26, 2015, 03:21:18 PM »
Can anyone help me out with timing info for my Mille?  The flywheel is missing the factory timing marks.  It has a few punches in what should be the right place but I cant verify without the manual.  I have a 1000cc manual for the G5 that shows
2d static advance
31d auto advance
33d total advance

Trying to do a tuneup and this would help.
Thanks,
Toby

The only way to know for sure if the marks are right would be to use a degree wheel on the crank to find the correct spot for each mark. You can probably find a degree wheel that can be printed like this:
https://www.google.com/search?q=degree+wheel&biw=1680&bih=899&tbm=isch&imgil=WOiuAX2kSWTDKM%253A%253BX0WKXy1pXRukaM%253Bhttp%25253A%25252F%25252Fwww.laverdaforum.com%25252Fforum%25252Findex.php%25253Ftopic%2525253D86485.0&source=iu&pf=m&fir=WOiuAX2kSWTDKM%253A%252CX0WKXy1pXRukaM%252C_&usg=__0iUX3RUCh3_CUOw9C1IAxM5lyGk%3D&ved=0CFIQyjc&ei=U-yNVdneLIWjNvmsg9AG#imgrc=WOiuAX2kSWTDKM%3A&usg=__0iUX3RUCh3_CUOw9C1IAxM5lyGk%3D

print onto card stock or if not use paper and attach it to cardboard. Attach it to the front of the crank and calibrate it like this:

It's very wordy but he covers getting the degree wheel lined up correctly.

Once you know that the marks are right then you will be able to set the timing correctly. It looks like you have the right info, 2d at idle and 33d at full advance. If there is a discrepancy between them make the total advance right. That's where it matters most!

Or just come by my house. (Might not be practical!)

Hope this helps.

I just went through Hunter's method recently with my '89 Mille.  I don't really like the vagueness of the flywheel marks that don't have an accurate pointer.  I already had an aluminum degree wheel, so it wasn't hard.  When set to spec, all tendency to ping is gone.  I may advance the distributor a degree or two until it pings a little and back off, just to see what that setting is.  A little clink on rare occasions tells me I'm getting the best power and mileage I can.

Thanks man, but i'm mainly trying to verify that the numbers are correct.  I cant find a Mille handbook and i've rolled back to points.  I set up the static timing and strobed it.  Its close to being spot on.  Raleigh isnt too far away man, i'd roll up just to see your Laverda.

Mille GT is spec'd the same as Cali 2 or 3 engine wise, some is T5. If you have a Motoplat dizzy all bets are off, one cyl will be 1/2 a degree off always.
