One thing that has been missing most years is an official greeter with a registry at hand so we can get everyone's info . Chris (Two Wings) has volunteered to perform this valuable function for this year's Okie  :thumb: No exceptions , you WILL sign the registry

Now , anyone else want to be in charge of something ?

 Dusty

Dusty, I wouldn't mind being in charge of the codswallop with your assistance of course.

Yeah.....Tracy said he to do a day ride straight to get to any interesting roads.  The main reason for the HD barcolounger bike.  Of course, riding on gravel at speed will get your attention.

Okie Rally with high tech 'puters and fresh electrons
« Reply #166 on: July 29, 2016, 10:09:51 PM »
So, Dusty said to post this in the Okie thread, but I'm way too tired and impatient to find it.

Anyway.  For those electron savvy folks heading to the Okie rally---can somebody bring Guzzi-Diag, hook-up cables, a laptop, and whatever Sorcerer's
Stone and newt kidney is needed to read fault codes on a Guzzi?  And see what the ECU is doing?  And perchance to demonstrate how to load a better (Beetle) map?

I'll offer up my 13 V7 Stone as the test subject.

Some of us Luddites want to learn new stuff on a "hands on" basis.

Thanks.

I don't have the guzzidiag stuff myself, but I don't think you should wait till the rally to get some.  Although it looks capable of serious voodoo, it's also just too easy and fun not to play with for entertainment.

I recently got a chance to overview it as we installed and tested it on a laptop/15M cali combination.  We hadn't followed the threads, so I was ignorant of it beyond the note telling us to let windows find the dongle drivers.

We muddled through setup in a hands-on way.  There was no special knowledge needed to install it.  The dongle self-installed and self-assigned a port, and the programs loaded in about a long coffee sip.  The only part that needed any computer awareness was setting the communications port in the software to agree with the dongle.  I used to do that a lot, so I just assumed the steps and went for standard settings.  I'm sure the discussion explains it.  There was no drama during use until we managed to connect to the wrong port once, but that was quickly reset.  The reader/writer also didn't want to hold a port assignment, but setting it before a session is no big deal.  There may be an .ini edit to fix that.  Sometimes I wonder what they were thinking when they wrote parts of it, but it all seems to work.

Once Guzzidiag got us trained, it seemed to work as advertised with no fuss.  The problem is always getting smarter than the computer screen, and it took us an hour or so to understand what we saw and why it was there.  I'm sure the curve would have been better if I'd studied up on it first, but I was jumping in on it cold.  Most of the intuitive oddness can be explained away as brits writing code.  But when we fired it up there was a lot of data to read telling us the baseline was in specs and happy, and also that it needed to warm up more before tuning.  Once we got the reader/writer parts sorted out John began looking at maps.  That's where Beetle's B-mappies (tm) come into play, and although it's the interesting part, that's where I had to leave it.  My brakes needed bleeding.

The reason I don't use guzzidiag and B-mappies (tm) is because I bought the vdsts for my ecu sometime in the last century, and for the money it cost back then I need to keep using it.  Otherwise I'd be buying the dongle and a laptop and getting with the 'program'.  For the money outlay there's no excuse for anyone with efi to not own it.

Feeling lazy today.

How about reminding us who we should talk to at the park.
Last year I called and was told by someone that I didn't need reservations.  Thanks to Rudy for letting me hang my hammock behind his campsite.

What is the name of the camp hostess we should talk to.  And her number please.

Please and thank you.

At one of the National rallies, a tent camper needed electrical hook-ups.  He had a room air-conditioner on his tent and yes he came in on a bike towing a trailer.  Could have been 2 Elkaders ago.   IIRC there was a pix posted on a thread here.

The guy who started the Okie at its current location did the same thing , maybe still does . He has gone to the Dark Side so we never see him anymore

  Dusty

He's my coworker and an interesting dude. Runs cross country on either a Guzzi or HD with straight pipes. Mostly CMA events. WFO, 5-700 miles at a clip, towing an overloaded kwik-camp with a small 115 volt a/c. Wonders why he always needs a valve job. Has 3 or 4 burned up Guzzis and 2 or 3 damaged HDs. Can't interest him in a Gold Wing or Triumph Rocket 3 with an actual exhaust. The world need folks like him....

Yep , KB is a character alright , when the OK CMA event was at Cedar Lake the weekend after the Guzzi deal he would just hang out in the Ouchitas after our deal , and then attend their deal . He did once follow a couple of us North over the San Bois Mtns pulling his Kwik Camp behind a Cal II , he said he was doing pretty good till we started touching 90 MPH in those long sweepers

 Dusty

But, but, I'm sure you meant 90 KPH....

I just got off the phone with Mrs. Mary at the campground. I have spots 9 and 10 reserved if anyone needs power. Also she said that Gary and Toni have a spot reserved and spot 8 remains open. She did give me two names that I haven't heard of that have spots reserved, but she didn't know if they were in our group. She's trying to put us all together in close proximity. Thanks Dusty for the reminder and tell me what we need to bring......

I may have a plan -- Bullwinkle's Rustic Lodge in Poplar Bluff, MO is just half way for me (390 miles).  So I could stop there on the way down and then again on the way back.

What day do most people arrive?  I am tent camping, no electricity needed.  That means I do not need a reservation -- right?
