Author Topic: would you ever buy a dealer's demo bike? (Read 11866 times)

I'm in the market, possibly for either an Aprilla Caponord or the MG Stelvio. My local dealer has a Caponord 3,000 off because its their demo bike. The downside is I've been in there when the owners buddies show up and want a bike for a day and he flips them the demo bike keys. So some days someone is riding it like they stole it. But its 3,000 off.

Anyone ever work in a dealership? is a demo bike worth considering or am I crazy to even suggest it.

You know what? Most people baby the crap out of their new bike. There's a tendency for them to take forever or *never* break in. I'm a believer in running them pretty hard when new.. YMMV, of course, and I'll get flamed for saying this.

But.. I'd put the 3 large savings in my pocket and smile if I was concerned about how much it costs. I seriously doubt that it's hurt.
Personally, I'd rather break in my own bike, though. <shrug>

For a dealers demo bike the factory warrantee doesn't kick in until it's sold to you, right? So you have that to fall back on if problems develop.

I have and would again. 2009 (bought same year) Ducati 848 had 600 miles for a sizable amount off sticker + it has $1000 Termignoni CF slip-ons.

Short answer: YES.

I know for a fact that Ducati puts every bike on the dyno and runs it up in the rev range...not put-put-put but actually stressing the engine. Other manufacturers do the same. They need to make sure nothing is going to break right off the bat. For an owner to think he is breaking in a 'virgin' engine is foolish.

Like others, I use an aggressive break in procedure and my engines never burn oil. They all run like a scalded ape. I'm much more aggressive than your dealer's buddies! The difference is that I then change the oil at 100 miles. That's probably overkill but $50 well spent as far as I'm concerned. The plan is do to full throttle runs in 2nd-5th gears, up to about 6K rpm..coast down...and do it again...and again. After about 15 minutes of this let the engine cool. Then do it again. You want the rings to seat really well. All the other drive train stuff will settle in just fine.

My only concern would be for the clutch. If somebody was abusing the bike by pulling wheelies they might wear the clutch. Hey, $3K would make a big difference for me. Guzzi has a similar deal through the end of the month..new bikes, not demos.

all good replies. I was thinking that a proper thrashing as long as it's not dropped or tires spoiler, is just what a fresh bike needs. if reviewers are taking it they can't risk performance so it will be looked after. I'm going to give it a test drive. tx all

Yes.

At the dealership where I worked years ago, staff would put the first few hundred on the demo bikes to make sure they were run-in properly.

Some customers hammer the Hell out of demos, but most don't. Our demos got most of their miles from staff.

If the bike is in good shape. If the price is right. Sure.

Twice. An 85 BMW K100RS and my current 2007 Norge. It all worked out OK.

Yes. My V7 is a demo, and I got it with 185 miles, and 3k off msrp. Buying in February when it was 25 degrees outside helped with the price.

just think you'd have an even more exclusive bike than a STELVIO.. who buys that Capo? I've never seen one on the road.

look for a demo Stelvio instead.
reviews I've read on the Capo were pretty bland but I never rode one. I do know a bunch of Buell Uly riders have gone to the Stelvio and seem happy.

I think the Capo is the most boring bike in the universe. Also make certain it isn't in the recall range for the output shaft replacement, that's a HUGE job and the dealer gets squat for it from warranty. Other than that 20,000 km service will be pricey as hell.

My Stelvio was a demo had 500 miles on it. got a good price and they did the 500 mile service before I picked it up. I did have an electrical problem that was taken care of. I would do it again.

Perhaps the motor is not a visceral as some, or reeks of the character of a Guzzi, but boring??? Those that this that, have not ridden many late model bike from Asia.

My '08 Norge was a 2 year old demo with ~3k miles on it. Still took another 5k miles for the engine to really break in. It was a great bike and I never had a problem with it. I'd do it again.

Mine was a demo with 1500 miles on it. 2012 MG norge purchased with full MF warr in 2015. Buy the bike.

I thought it through thoroughly and stand by it. Aprilia make some fantastic motorbikes. In my opinion the Crapponord isn't one of them. Oddly enough a lot of the people I find myself at odds with on other issues also find themselves at odds with me on this. Sorry. I'm not willing to change my opinion which is that the Cappo is a huge, Bubbling bucket of faeces and I'd rather stick my privates in a macerator and pour sulphuric acid on the remains than own one. If I ever have to ride another one it will be an eternity too soon! It's a horrible, tedious prick of a thing that needs shit-canning so Piaggio can free up some funds for Guzzi!

Yes I would. Most of the people that demo our bikes seem to just want a basic feel for it. They don't ride around like they're trying to steal it. And really, most people WOULDN'T want to ride aggressively on a demo for fear of damaging the bike and then having to fork over cash.

I bought my Monster as a demo, no issues. Would do it again if I found the right bike. Agree with what most others have said, I'd say if its the bike you want at the price you can afford, buy with confidence!
