Advice recommended: Moto Guzzi Transmission Shop

I have a 75 850T transmission that I rebuilt, unfortunately I was getting a lot of "false" neutrals on the work bench.  I sent the transmission to Charley Cole, unfortunately he is very sick and doesn't have the strength to do this job.  Could anyone recommend a good transmission shop that specializes in Guzzi's?  I've asked Cycle Garden Motos and Ed Millich (both in California, my home state), but their hourly prices are around $125.  Any advice would be appreciated :)

First.. you *will* get false neutrals on the bench.. if you went by Pete's shimming tutorial, it's probably fine. It's not rocket science.

When shifting on the bench have you a.) installed the shift drum detente?  b.) Are you turning one or other of the shafts as you try to shift? c.) have you tightened down the input and output shaft nuts?

Hi Pete, yes the shift detente is in place, and I am turning the output shaft when I shift by hand.  The only thing I changed were all the bearings, and shimmed the drum.  Thanks guys, I didn't know shifts in 'false' neutral were common on the bench.  Also, sometimes upshifting and down shifting is slightly tight when shifting by hand, I've read Pete and John's tech advice several times on This Old Tractor

We rebuild 75-100 transmissions and rear drives a year and our shop rate is $85 an hour.  Unless there are serious unknown issues 4 hrs should be max amount of time.  Once we have it we do a tear down and inspection and call with and an estimate.  If you decide not to proceed then that's up to you.

Used to have false neutrals all over the place unless I was really positive about shifting. Now, it just doesn't happen, ever. Its been 70, 000 miles since Sean worked on it, still perfect. Best shifting Guzzi 5 speed, ever, IMHO.

This. Sean *is* one of the best mechanics I've ever met. He used to work for Mark at MGC, and I've seen a lot of his work.

Thanks for the advice everyone!  I just got a PM from JoeW the day I put up the post, I think I'm going with him.  I'll be having him do the ElDorado shifting drum swap on the 850T transmission.

Another plus for Sean Fader especially if your on this end of the country. He is excellent mechanic and fair in his pricing.
