Half Rollered
« on: September 21, 2015, 07:44:05 PM »
I finished the left side roller conversion today. But when I hand rolled the engine to check the new valve settings I just made I now hear a clicking noise at certain points in the revolutions. They are light clicks that come at the same points and are repeatable rotating in either direction. Nothing went bad during the job that I can think of or noticed. Any ideas from those who have done this. I still have the other side to do but would like to know what is up before I jump off on the other side. Right now I am a bit worried that I may have inadvertently screwed up. Never heard this noise prior to now when doing valve adjustments.

I think it is likely due to the chain tension er not being pressurized. You should only rotate the crank clockwise ,especially with a slack timing chain. I was surprised at how long it actually took for the tension pistons to re pressurize after start up. It takes a minute or so before the chains quite down. Try turning the crank a full couple of rotations clockwise only, and see if the clicking stops.  dave

Thanks, I was leaning in that direction but just wanted to hear from someone with more experience with the 8V engines. It will be a day or two before I get to doing the right side. Then I will be dropping the pan and flushing the oil cooler and hopefully all this crap will be done with. I doubt that I have any real issues from what tappet coating ware has taken place but after all of this its seems best to play it safe.

Yup, I'd noticed it and couldn't think of an explanation other than some sort of movement in the tensioners. As long as the chains aren't worn out you have nothing to worry about. Just do the other side. Rotate through 720 and re check the timing on both sides just to be sure then spin 'er up!
