I, of Welsh heritage, am jealous. What brings you to Wales? Where were you? It's always been on my list. The kids have been there, I haven't made it yet.

Chris,
these are photographs from two trips through Wales.  I did my best to spread out, but as you can see, there are plenty of roads left to ride.

(I've made two other trips to Wales, but those were in a car so I ignored those for this collection)

Fantastic pictures!  My dad was staged there before the Normandy landings with his US Army Medical Corps hospital for about three months.  Said the food was bad, women toothsome, rains frequent, and beer excellent. Early 1944.

There's a memorial in Devon (south of Swansea, which is where I assume your father was stationed) for the 640 Americans killed during a training exercise for the Normandy landings.  I've not been there (yet).

They sure don't over pave in the west country. No need to explain why the left side of autos are well greased...

Thanks for the photos and memories.

I think I recognise some of those roads! It's a nice part of the world for just bimbling about. Not so good if you want to get somewhere in a hurry.

Looks like you had good weather. They say that in Wales you can tell when the summer's coming 'cos the rain gets warmer. Last weekend was brilliant though. I was above Llyn Brianne which is just NW of Cynghordy on your map. I live near Aberaeron on the coast.

Great pictures as always Daniel. Do I detect a stretch of Bwych y Groes there?

Really nice thanks Daniel. :thumb:

Funny, some of those roads could be in New Zealand. However, the narrow roads would of course be gravel...

Could be.  I believe I took this shot at the top of the pass (or very near to it):

Fantastic! Thank you, they bring back fond memories. I lived in Aberystwyth for a year and explored many of the same areas on a bike. I see you did not make it to Aber. If you do, try the A4120 that leaves Aber to the East. You will swing by Devil's Bridge, which has some neat history, and then will be on a one lane past abandoned industry. Continue on to the B4574 and then take the road to Rhayader. A right down to the Craig Goch Reservoir is a nice alternate that can turn it in to a loop ride.

I meant to, but the rains were so heavy when I was there that many of the coastal towns were flooded, and even some stone bridges were under water.  It was impossible to get to Aber from the north.  It was very wet even by Wales standards.  Lucky for me, though, it was often local and not often continuous through the day, so I was able to carry on in some way.

I've been out that way today. Local Guzzi meet was in the Elan Valley near Rhayader. My route took me up through the Ystwyth Valley then down the Elan Valley past all the reservoirs to the visitors centre. It was another fine sunny day so the place was heaving with bikes - mainly Harleys on a group ride. This time I was on "The Fire Bike". The only photo I took was on the way back home when I stopped before descending the Cwm Ystwyth. This is looking back toward Cwm Elan.

Awesome!

What's the speed limit?

Awesome!

What's the speed limit?
It's 60mph but in places it's difficult for a car and bike to pass let alone two cars.

Wow.  I have never seen a sunny beach in Wales.  I doubt the Welsh Tourist Board will believe you...

...in a nice large-format coffee table book...
In fact, such glossy, large-format coffee table books do exist (as shown below on an actual coffee table).  However, the publishing run is severely limited for each.

Really? Wales?...
And not one single indecipherable road sign?

Beautiful photos as always but some of the flavor is lost. :boozing:

That's the ticket! :thumb:

My Mother in Law is off the boat (747 as it were) Welsh by way of London and I get a kick outa hearing her do the lingui-gymnastics with that language. Getting a couple of Gin & Tonics in her to get her to use some of the more colorful colloquialisms is riotous.
