Stelvio throttle cable adjustment
« on: June 07, 2016, 08:58:56 AM »
13 Stelvio. On the throttle housing, which cable is the closer and which is the opener? Can't visualize it ...

I rode through a ton of rain yesterday and now the throttle isn't closing with the kind of certainty I'd like.

I sprayed some WD40 on the springs under each throttle body and snugged up the rearward adjuster at the housing but am wary of why it became loose.

Do you mean when you let go of the throttle grip, it doesn't snap closed with authority?

If so, the first place I'd check is on the handlebar.  Grip interference with switch housing or bar end.  Dirt/grime between the throttle tube and and handlebar.  Etc...

Correct. When I twist to WOT it snaps back ok, but if I just lift off idle it's lazy closing.

Steve , have you checked the other end ? You could dissaemble the throttle housing to determine which cable does what .

If you sprayed it with WD40, and don't clean it off, that will likely gum up and lead to bigger issues later.

The problem that you are having is easily at the throttle grip end. Check to see if the throttle grip is rubbing the housing or something.
Or it may be a frayed cable, but that is very uncommon.

When I adjust the cables, I adjust them both to about equal amounts. When adjusting free play, opener and closer doesn't really matter, just adjust the free play to what you like.

I'd remove the grip end and clean up the bar. Sometimes the throttle tube gets gummy on the bar itself (or you have other binding going on there).

To answer the original question, the aftmost cable is return, the forwardmost cable is pull.  The cables join at the top of the grip if it helps you visualize. I just replaced the grips on my Norge with Stelvio grips so it must be the same.
As others have said, removing the grip and cleaning inside grip and bar and lubricating the bar may be your biggest help.  I used a light white lithium grease spray to do mine.

Thanks for the help, all.  Fixed it.

I installed a Kaoko throttle lock a few days ago.  Maybe I didn't install it quite right or maybe it got dirty in all the rain.  I removed the plastic friction washer, cleaned things up a bit, and reinstalled the Kaoko bar end weight without the friction washer between it and the end of the throttle grip.  Now the throttle snaps closed as it should.
